Wifes tahoe threw a CEL. Code showed a bad canister purge valve. Replaced that. Light came back on a few days later. Bad knock sensor now. Had to remove the intake manifold to replace them and their harness since GM thought putting them in holes that fill with water and destroys them and the harness was a good idea.

2 weeks later CEL is back. New gm knock sensor failed. Tore the intake off and replaced it.

Driving around waiting for the readyness monitors to set it throws another CEL.

Running lean. Low fuel pressure so It got a new Delphi fuel pump assembly.

Now the fuel pressure is good but it threw another CEL for a bad fuel tank pressure sensor thats part of the new fuel pump assembly.

Its been 2 months chasing the CEL trying to get it ready for a smog check.

Only have 3 more weeks till the tags are up. Might not make it at this rate!

Happened to my wife and I years ago on our 2001 Corolla. One emission code after another, replaced every sensor/harness short of the catalytic converter, code didnt go away. Finally sold it to an out of state buyer since it wouldn't pass inspection and I was done throwing money at it/ wasting weekends working on it.

Chris,
if it were me, I'd be at the point of buying it one last gallon of gas, and a lighter.

The EVAP readiness monitor is a tricky one to complete. It was months where the EVAP readiness monitor would not complete on my Silverado due to a bad fuel tank pressure sensor. Replaced the fuel pump with an OEM one and the EVAP passed within two days following a driving and resting procedure.

ya I wish. Here they plug onto the obd port first. Any codes or unready monitors and you immediatly fail..... And they take your money! No pre test or " hey its going to fail get it out of here" here.

If it was NH all you would have to do is buy a pre-96 (OBD1) vehicle and it doesn't matter if the light has burned a hole thru the instrument lense, you're still good to go.

What about trying a bottle of CRC guaranteed to pass emissions and give that a go...i know it may not solve the engine codes but might solve/keep at bay other issues til ur test.

the ck eng light is an immediate fail and costs $50. It will pass the test once the light is out.

Chris, I feel for you! Really dumb, but have you replaced the gas cap? Can you smell fumes around the fuel filler area?

Just had to replace the cap on the Avalanche to stop and evap code.

There is a reason the pre-smog vehicles are so expensive in the used market ...

ODB-I is the way to go if you want semi-modern performance and features

for $15 you could buy the reader which will tell you if your emission monitors are complete or not. If anybody is paying $50 to the shop to read that, they are moron.
