Electric Nascar

so was the Hemi after it won too many races in 1964..It lasted for about a year or so...
Petty was running a hemi in 1970. The hemi was only banned because not enough were sold to the general public but that was reversed later.

Chrysler's 426 Hemi was not allowed to compete in NASCAR's 1965 season due to its unavailability in production vehicles that are sold to the general public.

Now it seems none of that matters since the rules for NASCAR has changed so much. I think when it came to performance that really helped push it to the public requiring it to exist for the basis of racing.

Mee too
Grew up just 2 blocks from a Ford Dealer, saw and touched and sat in several Boss Mustangs and CJ Torino's. But I also remember the Cortina's and other Ford orphans.
and I remember some Daytona Chargers and Plymouth Superbirds sitting on the showroom floor too...

Of course there is something to be said for the intense thundering noise and shockwaves and fire that shoots out of the headers that would be missed
I've been to many events on the NHRA pro circuit. If a virtually silent top E dragster replaced the incredibly loud top fuel dragster, I would stop going.

30 years ago when I moved to KC there was a Daytona Charger with wing that would be out on I-35 on Sundays now and then. Usually a bit NE of KC. Have not seen it in about 10 years. 30 years ago there was a lot less traffic and less chance of an accident. There is one on Facebook right now. $299K asking been on there for several years IIRC.

I remember one year on I 70 in Indiana and group of at least 15 of them passed be by on the interstate...It was some kind of club going to a rally....

How 'bout a twist?
Divide all production vehicles into competitive classes. Use displacement or hp increments as classes.
Keep it familiar by allowing tire, shocks and bushing mods only.
Yes, stock intake-through-exhaust.
Involve limits on 2WD / 4WD, weight, overall dimension etc., as needed.

Enjoy Grand Prix d' Monoco style races on real/charming streets.
Credo: "Racing at YOUR center of gravity"

The open wheel racers twisting about romantic, narrow streets is oddly slow and unrelatable.
I'd bet production cars doing it would look better.

I understand why, but it still sounds weird every time that this is such a sticking point.

You gotta feel the noise.
I don't know what it is about top fuel, but I never got into it. I watch a lot of drag racing though. I watch a lot of the multi track series and have a friend that takes a 7 second '89 Camaro on Sick Week each year.

That said while an EV is naturally quick in the quarter, it kind of stops past the really fast street legal stuff. The dragster style EVs haven't hit those numbers and I wouldn't have interest in those anyway. While I have gotten into Formula 1 there's something about a car that doesn't have a a basis in a street car that for some reason loses my interest. I'm not entirely sure of the full reason, other than the built car instead of the single purpose built car.

I can't necessarily say I'm not interested in EV drag racing, but for sure the system is so efficient and consistent in a way that it's much more repeatable than a built combustion drag car. Cue jokes about microwaving steaks. I think when the systems are more understood and an aftermarket genuinely develops for EV powertrains we may see a change in EV drag racing, but for me they're the set it and forget it type of vehicle which in some cases I like. There's not much point in drag racing them. We know what they'll do every time after we've seen a couple of runs out of that car.

I like the sound. I'm not stuck on the sound, but the rest of it doesn't exist to have that modified car level of competition.

There's a lot of misinformation on EVs. I'm amazed by how much of it exists in these forums where most content is heavily based in facts.
and what I messaged was a joke.. I didn't think that needed to be explained.. yes joking is allowed on this forum. 🤪

I used to enjoy watching Nascar and F1 but now I sort of have grown out of it. I would say they are both fun in their own way and it is not the same. However Nascar has a very different problem than F1 that it relies heavily on nostalgia and the cultural bond of SOME people in the US, and in order to maintain this cultural bond we have some weird things like: "stock" car frame when nothing underneath is stock, V8 when it has not been the best design for stock car and same for carb engine till recently, over powered engine for the safety limit they have no idea of how to make things exciting yet safe at the same time, making things boring in the end because to the latest racing technology this race looks boring and nostalgic.

Eventually they will run out of fans if they keep trying to sell on nostalgia, like HD would run out of boomer buyer if the younger ones think they look too boomer if they are caught in one.

F1 has a similar problem when they ban a bunch of stuff like KERS and certain aerodynamics design, engine innovations that are available only in one manufacturer, etc, but they at least look a bit more fashionable and the international market is still there. The only "real" racing I watch these days are rally racing. You don't need to be too fast but all the jumping and dirt flying is exciting, accidents and car flipping all add to it too, even if it is going 4x slower than in a circle.
