alot of people seem to block their egr valves on the new diesels. do you think this actually makes a difference in longevity? I know it's less things to break, etc. if my wife's 07 classic duramax (lbz) wasn't under warranty I would block. in fact I will block it after 100k so i will never have to replace the egr motor. I just hope I'm not going to "kill it" by not blocking it until then. I wonder if they're really such a big deal like every thinks. How is the oil looking with the egr opposed to without one?
I think just using a robust oil should make every thing ok.

thanks

My Nissan has EGR.

Soot doesn't seem to be an issue, and I'm limited to PCMO rather than HDEO due to manufacturer requirements.

In VW diesels, the EGR tends to fill the intake manifold with soot, so the manifold has to be removed occasionally.

Somewhere around here is a UOA of someone with a Jeep 2.8 diesel, and improvements by eliminating EGR.

Taking away EGR will get you massive fines if you car is in a smog test state. IIRC, Massachusetts is as tough as California, so you shouldn't do it.

actually you would think mass is tuff but it really isn't on diesels. it depends where you go. there still is no smog test required so they never look at anything else other than safety items. my ford's had a straight pipe for 5 years.

all i care about for my wife's truck is keeping the warranty intact. I'm away alot and i want her to beable to bring the truck in if there's a problem and not get hassled.

Your warranty will be void if you bypass EGR.

Put off bypassing it until the factory warranty ends.

Also, be prepared for a constant check engine light caused by an error code in the EGR system.

I had that on my Grand Marquis for 6 years until I finally pulled the top of the intake apart and unclogged the ports. In less than 40 miles, the light went off and has stayed off since.

On the Jeep 2.8 CRD thee is an after market mod, an electronic box, that fools the engine computer into thinking that the EGR is fine. So the EGR is not physically blocked and no error code on the check engine light. Nice that if the check engine light comes on you know there is another problem.
I don't have that mod, just carry a code reader and check periodically that there are no other codes.

Chevy/GMC equipped w/the Duramax diesel have things available that fool the ECM into thinking that the EGR is still funtional, even when it's not.
