Ecore - opened up this weekend

I opened up a ST Ecore off of my wife's 1994 Merc Sable with the 3.0L. I had been running a mix of Superflo 10w-40 and Delvac 1300 for about 2000 miles.
I think it was the #3600 Ecore filter.

Took it apart with a hack saw and a pair of pliers. The paper media was in good condition, uniformly spaced except for about 3 or 4 pleats near the seam. No holes or anything. The felt endcaps were fairly well attached, I could tear them off by hand, but they were otherwise attached to the media.

It had been on the car for about 4 months and 2000 miles.

No problems seen here.

Of course, the oil pressure pushes the end caps on. It is like driving a tank over the stone bridges the Romans built. There is nothing holding the stones together.

I could swear the ADBV/bypass material is (black) silicone in the Ecore I looked at. That certainly would make for more consistent performance as the material "ages".

About the only thing that concerns me is that I see a few stray fibers at the end of the "felt" material when I shine a light through an ST3614. They're actually wedged between the plastic cage and/or metal thingie (I don't know what to call it). I doubt it's a real issue other than they "flap in the wind". Otherwise, that fiber endcap seems to be thermally "melted" and somewhat shiny (or at least what little I can see).

I installed one of these things in my folks' Camry. I think I'll keep that filter and run a used oil analysis on it at the next oil change.
