EBC Rotors/pads vs Akebono/Powerstop?

I wanted to put EBC yellow on my ford flex but that 5300 pound bread box eats brakes like a fat kid got loose in a willie wonka chocolate factory.
I love my Akebono ASP pads, great cold performance and no high initial bite which is bad here in Lake effect snow land.
I think I may put EBC yellow on my Mini cooper project car.
That is a design problem. Heavy vehicle and undersized brakes. Yes, ceramic ones will buy you some additional mileage.

You want to know the crazy part? Those are the upgrade brakes, they had smaller rotors in gen 1
How big is an upgraded rotor? Also, take into consideration that size of rotor includes the hub. So the sweep surface might still be small. My Sequoia has a smaller sweep surface than both BMW and Tiguan, and those two cars weigh 3,600lbs, while Sequoia weighs 5,934lbs!

Its not much bigger but it is MUCH heavier and the hub part is thicker and has cooling veins along with the regular rotor cooling veins.
I think its 11.8 vs 13 but the main difference is MASS

Yeah I see alot of caliper upgrade videos for Toyotas. Unfortunately almost all of them involve the use of wheel spacers and that would be a no for me.

I have Powerstop (slotted and drilled) rotors and EBC (red) pads on my '02 Tahoe. I went that route because it's mostly used for towing and OEM rotors and standard pads were getting a bit spongey trying to control the load coming down the mountain ranges. With this setup, there's no fade.

I've got 2 full winters on mine and 20K. The rotors don't look brand new (obviously) but aren't an eyesore by any means, but the redstuff pads when i rotated, looked to be brand new still. Red stuff dust like mad for the 1st 10K, to the point I almost switched them out. Then they produced no dust whatsoever. Almost like a switch was flipped. Ultimax 2 dust for the first few K, then next to not at all after. I was doing 80 coming into Chicago last summer and did a stand on the floor stop for a wreck in front of me and they saved my life. I'll be a customer for life after that. No vibration or pedal pulse and I've taken these things about as far as you can without track use. And Ed is right...their customer service is "top notch"!!

For rotors that give you longevity, no contest. Buy Stoptech Cryo treated rotors, available from TireRack among others. For road use they will most likely be your last rotors. Honestly real benefits on durability without compromising stopping power. For the pads I would go EBC Red Stuff for the road and Yellow Stuff for the track, recognizing your will see significant brake dust with the Yellow Stuff.

Used this combo (Yellow Stuff) on track for both a Porsche and son's VW R32 with excellent results. Cars are main daily drivers plus occasional track days, no regrets :)

To confound the decision process, let's toss this into the recommendations also

Cryo rotor reviews are all over the map. I considered them but for what they cost, I wanted to see more positive reviews.

OK now my only concern with the EBC kit is dust...seems there are mixed reviews on whether or not the dusting can be excessive with the Ultimax 2 pads. The Ultimax 2 per EBC is "fully non-metallic" but also not ceramic? Little confusing. EBC does not make red stuff pads for my application, otherwise that would seem to be a safer bet. @slacktide_bitog have you had excessive dusting with these pads?

I have it narrowed down to 3 options:

1. EBC Ultimax 2 pads/EBC geomet rotors - $363
2. Pagid Silver pads / Powerstop geomet rotors - $325
3. Brembo Prime pads / Powerstop geomet rotors - $351

Options 2 and 3 are full ceramic pads so should not have dusting concerns.

Dust should be similar to OE, though there will be more dust in the beginning due to the special coating that EBC uses to break in the pads.

But my car had over 250k on it already, and the wheels didn't exactly look knew in the first place, so I can't really judge firsthand about the dust

For the pads I would go EBC Red Stuff for the road and Yellow Stuff for the track,

Fyi yellows are no longer track rated, once they removed the copper the formulation changed. I lost my tried and true Stoptech 309s so tried the yellows they def have very good initial bite and more friction than stoptechs did. They work good for autox as well. But fade away fast once you push em hard (track use)

Sure they dust but I like to stop and I wash every other week.

How do the yellows behave as daily drivers?

I have yellows on my Impreza and I have no complaints. Apparently, you can track them but the bedding procedure is intense. I am NOT tracking the car. Also, I have the stock 18" black rims. Can't tell much about dust.

I haven't seen mentioned the EBC Greenstuff pads to go with their rotors. That's another option for a daily driver. It would be more money than their Ultimax pads but less than yellow I think.

Dust is an issue on the redstuff pads but not so much on the ultimax. They dusted for about 1k then nothing. The redstuff were horrible from new till about 10k. They were dirty, squeaked and squealed to the point I wasn’t able going to scrap them, then suddenly both completely stopped. The only reason I didn’t change them out was the stopping power was like no brake pad I’ve ever used, and it was friggin freezing. I’m glad I waited.
