I just had the lower intake gasket replaced on my 2007 Malibu that started seeping. If it ever happens to you, you'll notice a burnt oil smell through the vents. I was told this is a rarity with the engine.

Anyway, I just switched to full-fledged synthetic (PP) after they replaced the gasket and was thinking of swapping out the oil filter half way through the OCI in case there was some residual stuff from the gasket change.

The car has 45,000 miles on it, and has never had synthetic--just Formula Shell and dealer oil which is Northland semi-syn here. I was running 2,500 mile OCIs b/c of moderately severe driving. My thought here is that the synthetic might get a lot of gunk flowing and prematurely fill up the Duraguard I have installed.

Do you think it is a decent idea to swap the filter halfway through or would I just be shooting money out of the tail pipe.

Well, ..I'd just make the first OCI after the LIMG a shorter one ..but even that's conservative in the long-big picture. It's what I'd do though.

I normally run short OCIs anyway. With PP I was leaning toward a 3,500 mile OCI. I have a lot of short trips since I live less than 3 miles from work. I had thought of swapping filters at 1700 or so.
