I have a 2007 outback with a 2.5 naturally aspirated engine. The car is having some vvt issues with even after replacing the oil pressure sensor and the VVT solenoid on the driver's side cylinder bank (p0028 code). I want to keep the car for maybe one or two more OCIs before we trade it in. I was just wondering if there is a filter that flows well for this application to remove any chance that the filter could be part of the issue. I am not certain about the cheaper FRAM or supertech filters, will spend a few bucks on a quality filter just to see if it helps any.

I realize using a better filter it's extremely unlikely to fix the issue, but it seems worth a shot because you never know.

How many miles on your 2007 and has it been cared for throughout its 19 year life?

I'd guess the oil pan has to be removed to visually inspect the oil pickup screen...or was GSCJR referring to a screen within the VVT gasket?
The Volvos of my era have a wee screen as part of that gasket.

Did you use an OE part or a cheap one? Check the voltage and ground to the solenoid.

115k. regular oil changes but gets short-tripped a lot.

The Pentius XL 7317 and 3593A seem to have more filter media than any other filters in these sizes. The OEM Tokyo Roki filters have a lot of media as well and should have low restriction. If you do use a FRAM, use a 7317 if it will fit. The 9688 has tiny inlet holes. The Ultra and Endurance have lower restriction than the PH or TG.

Why did you change the oil pressure switch? Was it indicating low oil pressure? Have you done a proper oil pressure test?

I believe the newer Subaru engines have screens in the oil supply to the heads (in addition to the screens on the OCVs). They can clog up and cause issues even if the main gallery pressure seems fine. Not sure if your engine has these.

The EJ253 doesn't have VVT.

It has i-AVLS which is like honda's VTEC. It does have solenoids for oil control to lock the rockers to the high lift lobe or dump teh oil back into the head under the rocker cover.

Search the www for i-avls a bunch of stuff should come up.
