Like many things from the Mercury brand, we didn't get that generation of Capri in Canada.
Sure looks sharp tho!

Turbo?? Believe so w/ the red piping on the edge trim, but I could be mistaken.

Fun but dreadful vehicles by any reasonable measure...

Poor man's Elan, but with quality that would have made Lotus look great :D I am still amazed at Ford Australia's ability to take the majority Mazda drivetrain and floorplan and engineer out the reliability and build quality. My '91 Turbo 5sp had a myriad of electrical gremlins, notable recurring blow fuses for the cooling fans and failing head light motors, w/ the motor job being notably exciting as the original little flange nuts on the motor shafts would seize and shear the shaft...anti-seize made later replacements easier. At ~37k the shift mechanism detached and sunk a few inches, so I could still make it home, bit shifted with my fingertips as the knob was barely above the console. The Dealer happily noted I was out of warranty and no consideration was offered.

Fun though and good looking. They had one of the easier installing and better functioning tonneau covers I have used. I installed better tires and some handle better and go-fast parts from Rod Millen Motorsports (IIRC). Sold mine to free up $ for a Piper Tomahawk...that's a progression of events for the ages.

$8k seems high, but I'd consider it for rarity and cool looks alone. The car has aged well, at least appearance wise.

Check out my camber job! The scanner got weird w/ this photo for some reason.

Carfax shows moderate damage with another vehicle back in '97. Doesn't show what part(s) of the car that were hit.

Never ever ever, for me as well.... A $8k Miata is so much better in every way I can think of? Except rarity I guess, since once the Miata came out, I can't think why someone would've bought a Capri? So they are pretty rare!

I actually looked at the Capri when it was first introduced, but the fact that it was FWD killed it for me. On top of that, Lincoln-Mercury's penchant for hanging their captive imports out to dry was also a significant deterrent.

I wasn't old enough to drive when this was for sale, but all my friends at the time wanted a fox body 5.0 Mustang or Z28. My weirdo self wanted a Spirit R/T. No one wanted this.

I really wanted an M100 Elan but some measure of sanity and limited funds took precedent and at the time, Miatas didn't do anything for me.

When I was in early high school (early 1990s), one of the more popular girls in my grade had a grandfather who owned a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury dealership and he gifted her a new Capri when she turned 15th and got her leaners permit. This was i rural Alabama so I can imagine this particular example was the only we had ordered knowing full well that no one in that area was coming to his dealership to buy a weird Australian Miata-esque thing. That is the second time I can ever recall seeing one in person, the other time was a decade or more later and I randomly parked next to one.

Funny, I was never a FWD fan for fun cars, well except for my GTI, I remember thinking at the time “if FWD is good enough for Lotus now…”
