E-Cores... AC Delco vs SuperTech

Spent a little time at WalMart comparing the (AC Delco) PF46E with the (SuperTech) ST3506. Obviously, since these are both E-cores they have the same construction, but the AC Delco has noticeably thicker media. Although this seems to result in fewer pleats, this also seems to keep the pleats closer together. IMO, the Delco filters are much higher quality than the ST. (It seems to me that not all E-cores are created equal).

FWIW, I bought the ST3506 (mismarked at $1.50), took it home and cut it open. The media itself actually didn't look so bad... not very thick, but a bit more dense than the media on a NPS I cut open last week.

The pleats were further apart near the seam. The felt end caps are flimsily glued to the media - they are easily pulled away without tearing the media. I wouldn't trust them to stay attached for longer OCIs, just as I wouldn't trust the media near the seam from being flattened against the center tube and eventually compromised.

All things considered, though, this filter might actually be OK for very limited OCIs (maybe 3,000 miles, max). I know others have used these for longer, but it seems to me these things just aren't made to last very long at all. For OCIs of 4k miles or more, a better constructed filter from Wix or Purolator would prove to be more durable.

Not that I plan to use any E-Cores on my truck. I don't mind spending $6-7 on a filter and IMHO that's where the best off-the-shelf filters are priced. (I just haven't psyched myself into cutting open a $6-7 filter yet ; )

Not even worth $1.50 IMO.

Years ago, AC's had half again more media as the ST, which fell in mid pack with other filters such as thr Purolator Premium Plus. I wouldn't be surprised If AC still sells a superior filter.

As for the recent rash of bad Ecore reports, something doesn't smell right. It doesn't make sense. I don't trust anything reported on a forum like this.

wow, you gathered all of this just by looking inside the hole???

i cut a pf47 and a 3387a apart. media amount, and media thickness are IDENTICAL. i could not find 1 single difference between the 2 with my eyes

The only things I gathered about the PF46E from looking inside the hole was that 1)the media looked noticeably thicker than the ST3506, 2) this seemed to result in somewhat fewer pleats (although I did not count them), and 3) there were no noticeable separations between the pleats, as there was on the ST3506.

Maybt the PF47 and ST3387A are identical - I don't know since I didn't look at those.

One other note (which I also gathered by looking inside ST3506 holes)... I looked at 6 of these filters. (the only 6 left on the shelf). 3 of them had large gaps between the pleats. The other 3 were not so bad. Maybe one can attempt avoid bad ST e-cores by visually inspecting the inside of the media? Too much trouble if you ask me - just buy a better filter... but to each his own...

I wonder what the PF1233 (what I use in my corolla beater) and the ST "equivalent" looks like since I plan on switching when I run out of these delcos to save a few bucks (it's a beater, I don't care too much about it... it had been abused before I got it, so it'll get cheap junk put on)

Bingo, thats what I've always said, there scrap filters, run a NPS or wix or NG and you'll have something.

i wouldn't take it if they paid me $1.50

I ran a ST7317 for 10 minutes after I ran BG Quick Clean in my Protege. It looked alright to me, and a thread on a different forum had pics of one cut up looked decent for cheap "junk" too.

I guess the "not all ecores are the same" saying holds true

The PF1233 is not an E-Core design. Neither is the "equivalent" ST4967.
