I only recently heard about these Purolator tears on here, so when my dad went shopping at Walmart for oil and a filter for his Suburban, I told him to not buy a Purolator this time and get the AC Delco ecore (PF61E). I know for a while there weren't a lot of fans of the e-core, has that changed? Fwiw he only drives about 5000 miles a year/OCI now.

I have used the E-Core with good success. I've only seen pictures of others that have use the E-Core, and the center plastic tube(E-Core) has deformed under extensive heat or longevity. Mine have always looked great after a 5000 mile OCI. Also, some applications of Champ filters have non metal end caps.

It probably has, and it probably will again. The "hated filter du jour" rotates on a regular basis on BITOG. It was the "OCOD" for a while (Frame Orange Can Of Death), then the "e-scraps" or "e-scares" (E-core). Now it's the "Purotears" or whatever the "Puroh8ters" are calling the Purolator. Someone just posted a picture of a torn STP (Champ Labs). Maybe that'll be the next "never use" filter.

I just pulled a PL14610 off our CR-V this weekend. Filter looked great, after 5k miles. Will post pics in a separate thread.

Use what you want to use. If that's a Champ e-core, go for it. Everybody always hates something on this site.

It will be fine for a 5K OCI, not sure how it will hold up after a year though. I cut open one from the Uplander after a 3K run, and while it did its job...it didnt LOOK that great.

If you're concerned about using an eCore, AutoZone sells non-eCore versions...look for a part number without the E...i.e. PF61 instead of PF61E

Thanks for the replies. I wasn't even aware that the non e core filters were still manufactured. I picked it up at Advance with a 30% off online coupon so it came out even cheaper than the e-core.

I've run E-core filters and haven't had any problems. I've also run lots of Purolator filters and I haven't had any problems with them either.
With that being said, and just going by the bad luck that everybody else seems to have with their filters, a media tear from an E-Core could have the media going into the engine and causing an engine failure. A media tear from a Purolator filter is just that, a tear. The oil going through the torn media on a Purolator will get filtered the next time it goes through the filter and isn't as big of a deal as all the panicked posters on here think it is.
But once again, I've run both. Just this last weekend I pulled a MicroGard E-core off my Thunderbird...with no problems. My three Jeeps have had many Purolators on them...with no (knock on wood) problems. Another go-to filter that has never let me down is Wix.
My advice is to not lose any sleep over it and run either one. Or if you are losing sleep over it, buy your Fram or whatever else makes you feel better. There are a lot of mountains being made out of mole hills here.

Sure, a big chunk of media on a torn Purolator won't go down into the oiling system and cause major damage like it could with an ecore design.

But, oil flowing past a Purolator tear is most certainly sweeping some fibers off the torn edges which would end up going through the motor. Probably wouldn't do any real damage, but also your chances of living with one bullet in a 6-shooter is 83.3% with one cylinder spin and a trigger pull ... pretty good odds.
