Dynomax Super Turbo vs Flowmaster Original 40

Both mufflers on my 2001 Ranger 2.3L 4-banger. I stood about 5 feet from the tail pipe with a cheap camera to record the sound at idle. The tailpipe exits in front of the rear tire (still photo is from before with original tailpipe). First 12 seconds is the Dynomax Super Turbo at idle. Next 12 seconds is the Flowmaster Original 40 Series at idle. The last part is back to the Dynomax, but I rev it twice. You can see how obnoxiously loud the Flowmaster is at idle. I cut the Flowmaster off and installed the Dynomax which sounds great. My recommendation is only get the Flowmaster 40 if you have a hot V8 with a radical cam.



Under hard acceleration both are pretty loud inside but my son listened outside (sorry no drive by videos) and said the Flowmaster was twice as loud as the Dynomax.

I have had a Dynomax Super Turbo on the 1992 Aerostar 3.0 for about 7 years and it is still in great shape. It is nowhere near as loud as the Ranger because the Aerostar still has the long tailpipe out the rear corner.

I've had a few flowmasters and honestly I steer people away from them now. They might sound good on V8s, but they are way over priced. Thrush (also a Walker company) makes a muffler called the Thrush Welded which is the exact same inside as the flowmaster 40, since flowmaster lost their patent. The flowmaster costs 80-90 bucks while the thrush costs 30-40.

Flowmaster's quality has also gone down. I have friends with flowmasters and both me and my friends have had issues with the welds breaking on the baffles inside the muffler. This makes the baffle loose and it rattles under acceleration producing a very annoying sound. This happened on a friend's muffler that was not even a month old. A call to flowmaster was useless. I've seen it happen to 4 other mufflers.

They also don't withstand rust. Its rare to see one over 3 years old here without the insides rotted out or the connections on each end falling off the case.

I LOVE the sound of flowmasters on a 5.0. it's probably the best sound ever ver ever period, but they dont make as much power (however small of a mesure) as a straight through like magnaflow or borla.

ive had so many mufflers on 2 different stangs.

the flowmaster had that burbly echoing sound. it was sick.

the borlas had a more exotic screaming thing going on.

quality wise, flowmaster falls behind however; also in poiwer.
