Dumbest Engine Oil YouTube videos you’ve seen

You could follow it energizing on the 12V side with a scope, but that's not telling you valuable info about what's happening on the secondary side in terms of coil health. That's why it is typically best to just use the ECM's ability to provide diagnostic data.
Please refresh me on what is "secondary?"

I've heard this term.. you have primary and you have secondary. Since I'm getting the general gist of what you say.. what is?

Had a Grand Am like that. Wouldn't start when hot. Was a weak coil.

Hear doesnt increase resistance? (Or does cold increase resistance)
- or.. I think what you might be saying is that neither one of those should cause enough of a difference to make a difference in normal operating conditions?

I bought a couple of used cars where the main coil that fed the spark plugs or distributor was weak and caused issues, primarily when hot.

Yes, heat increases resistance, but it shouldn't be significant to the operation of the coil unless it is already filling its shorts.

The windings. There are two sets of windings in the coil, the primary windings, which are fed 12V, and the secondary windings, which are charged by the collapse of the magnetic field:

(also, it kind of seems like that primary and secondary operation is almost mimicking AC because if on is positive and off is negative then the alternating between those two currents or field seems to be what's producing the power. Is that accurate or no?)

it is not that on is positive and off is negative, it's the creation and collapse of the magnetic field that charges the secondary winding through induction. It's all DC.

Old school stuff when things were simple. :)

Project Farm gets too much hate IMO. It's just a dude who LOVES tinkering with stuff in his shop and on the farm. It's obvious he's having fun and I think he is truly honest in how he attempts to conduct his experiments and projects. Honest, in that he tries to remove as much bias as possible, even if his tests have no merit to actual tests done by professionals in the field. Members here act if he is doing research for major oil companies and if he does something that's not a valid test his data is going to ruin your engine oil. If he does an oil shootout, and it comes down to two major brands of top-tier engine oil, and one comes out on top, it doesn't matter if his tests were valid for real world use, as a person could have randomly picked any of the reputable oils used in his tests and have a happy engine.

I agree. He also even says they are for entertainment too. I know when I worked up at the dealership we had several customers come in saying those chose their oil based on his tests. They also said they watched Scotty Kilmer videos to help determine it too 😆.

After all, we can't have the world's #1 Motor Oil and Motor Oil Accessories and Enthusiasts site disapproving of the oil in your sump, can we? THAT would be unfortunate.

Scotty is far worse. He's all about posting clickbait videos and gives very bad advice sometimes as if it were proven fact. Sometimes he's even negligent like the time he was suggesting splicing brake lines with tools not designed for the task and potentially dangerous. For a guy his age, not using jack stands and crawling under cars, just proves he's been lucky, not that he doing thing right or the smart way.

I stopped watching Scotty sometime last year.

EricTheCarGuy I went from watching almost religiously to passingly. He used to start every video with "If it's your birthday, Happy Birthday." Some of his videos he doesn't so. I dont know.

MrPlow, I like ETCG because he is more chronicling what goes on with his Dad's truck (black 1990 Silverado 454SS I think) and the engine compression too high, the Fairmont (never liked that car,) the Acura and Civic, and Subaru and Legend back in the day.

I don't even have a problem with PF making video, just that its almost always NOT on a car. Thats about my only problem with the guy.

He's only half as annoying as Scotty.

Yes I know. His older videos that were actually not clickbait are somewhat useful. I think he tricks a lot of non car people to believe things. Even though I am a mechanic my dad still listens to him over me saying he is supporting him since we are all bias against him and I told him not at all just he needs to stop with the clickbait stuff.

Lol. Don’t forgot a Tap and Die and some WD40
