Hey, I'll be in that area tomorrow & Sunday.

If interested, I can suggest a much-better way to get home than I-90.

Tell me please.

From Bedford...128 south to the Pike. Take the pike west to I-84 south. (IIRC, the toll will be less than $1. It's the only toll before Ohio.) Go through Hartford on 84, CT 15, I-91, and I-691...follow the signs for the Charter Oak Bridge/NYC, then to I-84 west (signs for Waterbury/Danbury...it's easier than it sounds). Stay on 84 through NY and into PA to Scranton. In Scranton, take I-81 south (signs for Wilkes-Barre...I recall a left exit)...about 40 miles on 81 and you'll hit I-80. That will take you into Ohio...where in Ohio are you going?

Thanks. I will drive back to Dayton Monday morning.
Had a lot of fun today. I am thinking of staying here!

Went to the US Constitution, JFK Library, Newbury St. and I think a area called Sommerville.

Somerville?!?! And you didn't get mugged?! Was your favorite part the liquor stores on every corner or the bums sleeping in front of them?

definitively not it then. Lively place with lots of people and places filled with cafes and restaurants. I'll check the name again.

I have used that route myself. However, the OP should be aware that 84 in and around Hartford itself is a ZOO at times. There are some crazy folks driving in that area. I avoid it unless it is late at night or early in the AM. I won't go through there from 7AM-about 8PM.

Probably Cambridge (home of Harvard and MIT), which is one town over from Somerville.

It was Somerville likely Davis Square and/or Union Square. Lots of culture, good food, great unique shops, young college students and progressive folks.

Have you been to Somerville since 1979 you other folks

The first few times I drove through Hartford on I 84, it was a white knuckled horror show. Just when I got used to the alternating right/ left exits, my son and DIL moved to upstate MA. Call me crazy, but I think I 90 to Cleavland is worth the 20$ tolls. Be advised, I toss nickels around like they are man hole covers.

I drove the Thruway once...and they should have paid ME for the pounding the car took! I was cringing and it wasn't even my car. I've gone through Hartford many times (in vehicles ranging from a car to a 45' highway coach) and truly do not see the big deal!

If you're that terrified of Hartford (and I cannot fathom why anyone would be), then take I-95 south thru RI and into CT. At New Haven, bail off to the Merritt Parkway south. Follow that into NY state onto I-87/287. Cross the Hudson at the Tappan Zee, stay on 87 to I-80 at the Delaware Water Gap. One toll...I recall $1 at the Water Gap.

Bonus: I-80 across Pennsylvania (through the Poconos) has some VERY nice scenery.

I am not "terrified" in the least. I just do not care for all the whack jobs that drive around Hartford on 84. The people are flat out crazy there. They go 80 in 50 zones, zig zag from lane to lane, cut you off left and right, tailgate, etc... It is a big mess of roads going in all directions in the city too which can be tough if you don't know where you are going.

I have driven through there at least 25-30 times in my life, and will be again this fall when taking my Dad to VA for vacation, and it is not a fun area to drive in. Doesn't mean I am terrified. Just means I know what to expect and try and go through there when I can avoid the crazies.

Also, 84 through CT is not exactly the best of roads. Have lost shocks and exhaust systems on 84 multiple times. Just pointing out is not a drive in the country is all.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I left Boston yesterday and made a stop at another friend in Pittsburgh. Today I'll go back to Dayton.

I really enjoyed my time in Boston and hope the police catch whoever planted those bombs.

Take care all
