Driving and Cell Phones

Forgive me if I ramble, but I'd like to vent on a few things this cell phone craziness brings to my mind...

There have always been things that distract drivers from their responsibility of propelling our huge hunks of metal down the road in a responsible manner. Some things that come to mind: drinking, eating, smoking, putting a cassette/cd in, getting something out of the glove box, changing clothes (yes, I've seen that!), taking prescription meds and some other unmentionable things that should have been occuring in the privacy of their bedroom. There have always been laws on the books that cover in a broad sense ANY of the above actions while driving, so why do we need a specific one for cell phone use?

I served two terms as a Councilman in my City - during those 4 years I learned a lot about passing laws and what the implications are. Passing laws will not change thought patterns, it just penalizes them. Is that what we want? Everyone is a criminal? There are so many "don't do this, don't do that" little rules now that most everyone on the road at any given moment are in violation of one of them. Not to mention all the little piddly rules of small cities that you drive through having strange little meaningless rules so they can pull you over and get some revenue for their small city.

To answer a few that wanted to know why on earth someone would be on the phone while driving:
1. They're lost and someone is talking them to their destination
2. They had a big argument with their spouse/kid/friend/boss and are trying to patch things up
3. They own a business and one of their employees has a major issue that needs to be solved now
4. You're out in the middle of no-where staring down an 80 mile stretch of asphalt that doesn't turn with 2 cars per 10 miles and you're talking to someone on the phone to keep awake.
5. examples add nauseum...

Let's all stop being "busybodies" (old term) and worry about our own driving. If they get in an accident while using their cell phone (without hands free) then they get to pay the piper just as if they were doing one of the 30 other things a driver can be doing and get distracted. Side note: recently a guy was driving and veered to the right a little because he was reaching over to get something out of the glove box and killed two cyclists. Is he in trouble? Yes. Should we now ban glove boxes? No.

Have a nice day everyone...when and where to use a cell phone is the responsibilty of the driver.

I drive to work at 5 am. Not a lot of traffic but often I pull up to a light and the car next to me has a driver chatting away. Who in the world do you have to talk to at 5 am? geez

It's the law here in British Columbia. Although most ignore it as it would take a giant fleet of police to enforce. But I do see cars on the side of the road making calls.

Their wife cuz they just had a argument before he left for work...
The mistress cuz he just left his wife...

You idiots out there and your cell phone use just drives me NUTS! Why in the world do you feel the need to talk or text to somebody so much? I also see it at work, at lunch, while exercising, at movie theaters, the mall, at sporting events, walking the dog, the grocery store, while in line (anyplace), and just about every other place else on the planet. I've even been at the urinal before and had people talk on a cell. Seriously, what is it with you fools? Can't you exist for more that 30 minutes without having to be on the phone? Are you that insecure about yourself that you need the comfort of another persons voice.....or you may perish of loneliness? Strange as all get out to me. I went to the optometrist the other day and right there in the waiting area some middle eastern guy was practically yelling into his cell in arabic for at least ten minutes. Rude and highly annoying to say the least. And while driving to work on interstate highways....I see at least 30% or more people chatting away with cell phones at 65 mph.
No wonder I prefer the company of dogs.

Ah, now I see the problem...

Myers/Briggs says there's four basic personality types: (along with my interpretation of the current issue)
1. Preserver - doesn't really like to talk, especially on the phone
2. Maverick - too busy thinking up the next new thing to talk on a phone
3. Strategist - wants to talk face to face, not on a phone
4. Communicator - will talk anywhere, anytime, for any length of time they possibly can because that's they're function on this planet, to communicate ideas from one to another

Guess which one I am? (communicator)
Guess what the folks that get mad about people talking probably are? (not a communicator)

Very interesting...

I'm not sure I care that much about people on cellphones. There's a very large percentage who manage to pull it off. Just as there used to be people who drove off the road (or were otherwise distracted) prior to cellphones. It's the inability to multi-task--or even to focus on just one thing--that is the problem. Cellphones are but one thing that can distract.

My OT rant is, given how many people are on their cellphones on their drive--they're not all doing the above. Most are rambling about nothing in particular. IMNSHO. Fine, their choice, I could care less. I'm just perplexed about all the talking... and while driving.

Although I'd be ok with a law against texting, I'm pretty much against any new law. How about this: you can pass an anti-texting law as soon as we remove the speed limit on the highway?
wink.gif
That'd make for a great Constitutional admendment: the amount of laws we have to follow are a fixed number. To make a new one, you have to kill off an old one.

That's like saying standing in room filled with gas up to your waste is more dangerous if you have a full book of matches instead of just a half book of matches....

Pull over, grab a pen and paper, write the directions down. Call the person back when you reach a landmark for further directions. (while pulled over)

That can easily wait until they get home. Or, if it REALLY can’t wait, pull over and talk.

Again, if the problem really needs to be solved RIGHT NOW, pull over and talk

If you’re having trouble staying awake, you shouldn’t be driving. Period. Take a nap, have someone give you a ride, whatever. Drowsy driving is just as bad as drunk driving.

All of which are inexcusable and have a valid rebuttal…

I’m sure when someone smashes into you and kills your wife in the passenger seat because they were yapping away on their phone, you’ll feel differently. When these morons are sharing the road with ME, and have the very real potential to kill ME, it becomes MY business. It’s NOT being a busybody.

Yes, I'll be upset, whether they were talking on the phone or just not paying attention...

I agree with you that what other drivers do can kill me - my point is that there are a LOT of other things besides talking on a cell phone that other drivers do that are distracting enough to get you or me killed.

“Talking and eloquence are not the same: to speak, and to speak well, are two things. A fool may talk, but a wise man speaks.” – Ben Jonson, English playwright and poet.

How freaking irresponsible. I don't care how well you think you can multittask, when you are driving you have a responsibility to pay 100% attention to what is going on around you.

Checking who texted you is bad enough, replying to a text while driving, even sitting at a redlight is disgusting.

The world does not revolve around me, it certainly does not revolve around you. Hang up and drive. Have some consideration for others. The ME ME ME attitude that is so widespread in the populace is really a sign pointing to larger societal ills.

Put the phone down, look around you, and drive.

my thoughts entirely. well said.

I hope it's banned everywhere in the USA someday. Many people are not good drivers even if they devote themselves to driving when not talking on a phone.

It sure is annoying to be sitting at a stop sign in back of someone that seems to take forever to pull out into traffic, and then see them talking on a phone. Many people's priority is their phone conversation, not the other drivers on the road.

Several states have already imposed such a ban. How effective have they been at changing driver behavior?

I never text while driving, and don't read texts either,
I do answer the phone, as I can do it without taking my eyes off the road, but do not dial/call.

I use voice dialing if I MUST call someone in an emergency.

Its called "sight fixation", "wherever your looking you will steer in that direction" this is why on a motorcycle its taught to look through cornners and not at or whats in the appex of a cornner. People sight fixate on a police cruiser and want to see whats going on, without realizing it they actually steer there auto into a dangerous line..
In motorcycleing if you get into a turn to hot, fear has you looking at the cornner "sight fixating" on what you percieve you are going to hit. Riders lock up there brakes in a panick and the motorcycle stands up... and you guessed it they steer right into what they feared they would hit.. We are taught (raceing) to ALWAYS, look through that corrner and crank the bike over, most motorcycles are capable of doing much much more than the rider piloting the machine is will to let it do.
Long story short, look where you want to go. Rant over.

I love the Bluetooth with voice recognition in my Acura MDX. You can do dialing/talking all without taking your eyes off the road.

So why is not doing one of those things not a good thing? You can't justify bad behavior by pointing to other bad behavior...
