So I tried to connect my cell phone to the computer by USB jack an my computer does not recognize any device. The phone manual (it's a Nokia 6650) seems to indicate you need software called Nokia PC Suite. But why wouldn't the USB line be able to access the data storage on the phone? Did they purposefully block that so you have to buy their software? Cell phones frustrate me. You get a camera but it is relatively useless unless you can download the photos.

Yes, I had the same problem with my older Motorola. Use google and you phone make and model number, many of them have free software available to get into them.

Thanks, I could download the software, but my computer won't let me download any programs. Think it's the Vista OS and I don't have time to try figuring it out, besides with dialup a 36 meg file more likely will fail in the download. If Noika has it free I may have to ask for a disk, but there are other sites with free PC Suite so I am thinking Noika must charge a fee.

and that could work on an older prepaid flip phone? I have the same issue as TP, as I would like to take a few photos on the computer that way...

You probably just need the cable driver, not the entire Nokia PC Suite:

For only a few pictures, emailing them would be a quick solution.
For loads of them, bluetooth [wireless] or hard wiring into the computer is best.
Need software? You might get lucky here, but a dedicated forum or site would be best.

Out of boredom I looked up your owners manual, and it looks like you have a couple more options. One other option would be to go with a microsd card and usb reader. Also, have you tried adjusting the usb connection mode on the phone? According to the manual, you hit some funky loop button > settings > data cbl > data cable mode.

Sorry guys, not ignoring you, been extremely busy. Thanks for the various bits of advice. I did get from the manual, as user unfriendly as it is, that you could download music with a USB cable and a micro SD card. Never mentioned PC Suite for that one. I called the ATT Store and they said PC Suite is free, so I could get someone to download it for me I guess. The other thing is hopefully you don't have to specifically have their cable, any cable should do. Hate to buy a micro SD card only to find out it still doesn't work. Phone has a card of some other type in it too, but does not seem to do anything. If I sound confused or frustrated, there is good reason. Anyway, no big deal, it just would be nice to be able to download the photos. Also would love to put my own ringer on the phone, maybe Johnny Winter clip, or my dog barking--probably not possible.
So I finally got and installed the Noika PC Suite and still can't access the phone because it apparently will only recognize Noika brand or approved USB cable.
My Motorola phone will show connected on my laptop but I can't access it. I can on my desktop since I have the software.
As for pictures, I have sent them through a Bluetooth adapter in a USB port on the printer.
But mostly I use my Nikon for pictures and the phone to talk on.
