I think that Fram makes the filters. At least that is what a man at OReilly stated. I am not a fan of the drive works filter due to the fram manufacturing and card board end caps.

They are 100% sourced off-shore from China. While they look good, they are not of the quality that many would be looking for in a filter.

Huh? I believe the O'R counter guy is clueless regarding the DW filter sold at AAP. As shown in link the DW filter has metal endcaps.

It is made in China and looks to be well made, including the coil retainer spring. But, there's no efficiency spec information. Afaik, no relation to any US filter maker.

That said, with many reasonably priced metal endcap design filters made in the US, no need to chase the DW.

Wondering if thread title a is Freudian slip? lol

I checked out the Drive Works Oil Filters at AAP and they're quite heavy in weight(compared to Purolator) when opening up the box and looking at the filter, leading me to believe that they're well made. But, what I have read in other post/forums is that they often have lots of startup rattle, leading me to think that there is a design flaw in the ADBV.

I have seen posts where a member cut open a new DW filter and they look fine/well made and decently constructed as with just about any filter that I have seen pictured anywhere.

Are these Chinese made filters proven and tested like their US made counterparts?

Quality looked good when I purchased one. But after 3K of the OCI, my approximate five second start-up rattle returned (4.3 S-10). It's the same complaint I've read about these filters. Unless a store deal like this one occurs, I usually always buy Purolator Classics when using dino -- Puro Pure Ones when using synthetics in my multi-vehicles household.

Hard to say ... I doubt they are ISO tested like the major brands. If they are, you should be able to contact the manufacturer or supplier to find out. Of course, if they are not being legitimate, they can always say they are when they really aren't. Hard to say what's fact or not with products coming out of China.

If you have $15K to spare, I know a testing lab that will test any oil filter to ISO specs and give you all the results.

Sometimes they are and sometimes they aren't. A lot of it will depend on who is sourcing the filters and what requirements they have.

In this case AAP is sourcing them direct from China so whatever specs AAP has set forth is what they will be manufacturing to. If you've ever dealt with foreign manufacturing though, it can be an issue sometimes if they actually follow the spec that they claim they do. Not all are like that, but some are. This is similar everywhere though...somebody is always trying to pull a fast one or skip a step to get to the end goal whether that is manufacturing filters or doing your own household chores, etc...

I wouldn't bet the farm on a warranty experience with AAP though knowing it's backed in China.

I've used three of them so far. One on a Dodge Intrepid with no start up rattle in over 5K. Another one I've used on a PT cruiser with no issues as well. Finally I also used multiple of them on a blazer without any issues, in fact one went for over 10K miles... quite impressive actually if you ask me.

In all of the years that I have been a member here at Bob's and have heard of filter such as Hastings, Mann, Donaldson etc., I have never in my life, seen one/any! Not that I am looking for them either!

I've seen/read about them via the internet and even brought up their websites but, I have never come across these highly regarded filters in any of the autoparts stores that I frequent as none of the major chains carry them.

I'd say that if you can get these filters for your vehicles/equipment at this price, man, buy'em by the truck load. Great Deal! Great Filters!

Aren't they typicaly over >$10/filter?

Tell me where you get them... if I can't get them at that price (outright) it doesn't matter.

I buy whatever is cheapest... if it works for me without any problems, I don't care where it was made.

Just because it's made in the USA doesn't mean anything... people don't make these filters, machines do. Stuffing filters into a box isn't any better than working at McDonald's.

The machines that make the filters probably aren't made in the USA, and aside from the various bills that the plant pays (which doesn't go towards american's pockets, just towards corporations that most likely don't pay taxes anyways)... I really don't see the difference.

If you're high and mighty on the buy USA train, then you best be putting g-oil in everything you run with those american made filters, otherwise it just wouldn't be American!

Back to the point of the post, I just cut open pictures of the Driveworks filter that was on a 96 blazer with over 200K for 10K miles with oreilly synthetic oil. Pleats looked great and the filter had very solid construction.

For the cheap price I paid for them from Advance, was well worth it.

I get the Fed filters at Federated Auto Parts.

The LF110 (V8/V6 Ford Size) is less than 3$.

The one that fits my 4 Cyl focus costs more like 5.50$

I asked about it, and they said the price is based on how common they are... so that LF110 sells a ton, and they make a ton of them... thus it's a cheap filter to buy.

Clarcor makes very good filters, and they have proven themselves over time. Clarcor filters are Hastings and Baldwin.

If you want to stop safety inspections you obviously havent seen the unsafe junkers being driven around here. Even with inspections I have seen wheels come flying off and ball joints snap throwing cars into the divider. Better rethink that one. I wouldn't want to drive in a state without them.

sorry... is a comment on a signature not the thread... forgive me.
