Drain or Extract the oil on problem car?

My car is showing cam lobe wear so I will be doing twice a year oil change with 5w or 0w 30 instead of 5w20 for this 2003 Honda accord 4 cyl.model.
I read on some threads that I can use an oil extractor and change filter every other time ( Honda recommends filter change at alternate oil change).
I think there might be iron in the oil and everything might not come out by extractor. Is it good idea to take it to mechanic every 6 months to fully drain and change oil filter instead of extracting the oil myself and leaving filter in.
It will cost more but I want to keep this old car for another 5 years. And I do short trips a lot even in harsh winter conditions.
Thoughts?

The extractor should do fine, assuming you can get the pickup tube all the way down to the bottom of the sump. Most if not all of the harmful metal should get picked up by the filter. What oil change interval? Hopefully, keep it to 5000 miles or so.

I have had excellent luck with extractors. On my vehicles, every one I've used on, I've pulled the plug just to see how much is missed, and not a drop out of any of them. But like what was posted earlier, once that hardening gets broken, it will go quick. Find a new or used good cam for it.

I use a MityVac every 5K max, and swap the filter every other service. M1 5w30 has worked very well for me.
I do pull the oil drain plug from time to time as well. But the MityVac is such an easy, clean process. Just get the oil pretty warm; the hotter the better.
Good luck.

Not sure it matters how you change the oil. Any iron in the oil should be caught by the filter.

How have you determined you have cam lobe wear?

Doubt you will get five years out of the engine if indeed cam lobe wear has started.

depends on you, your age, your health.

since it sounds like you never used ramps before....find someone in real life to give you ramp/oil change safety tips. most people would be happy to share tips, especially if you say thanks with a 6-pack, lol.

if not...read up; and safety first!

PS, if you get a mityvac, you can use it for the ATF on that Accord. it has an ATF dipstick! you won't get out as much as an ATF drain.....and depending on condition, the ATF drain bolt might need a ginormous lever to make it budge. (also ATF change depends on mileage, if it has never been done, let sleeping dogs lie)
