I"m trying to do a drain and fill on the 09 taurus and I beleive I found the coolant drain plug. It's on the driver side, and it's toward the bottom and the drain plug is clear/plastic colored, I believe. That is the drain plug right? I found out where the Taurus drain plug was for the transmission and now I realize that I don't have to drop the pan anymore and can just use that drain plug which is nice. Anyways, that is the right drain plug, correct? it was huge and a 17 mm was too small for it. What is the size of it either in mm or sae inches, so I can know how large of a socket you need. ANd can you loosen it by hand like you can on the camry, or is it large and tighter and requires a wrench? I saw it had a hex pattern. Anyways, does anybody know what the size is and where it is, and pictures would be nice for a drain and fill procedure. THanks.

I don't know if you have a micrometer, but you could go out and measure it.
I'd bet its either 19mm or 21mm, but I can be wrong.
They sell micrometers at cheap import tool places for under $10.

3.5l Cyclone v6, 6f50 6 speed auto. some have an additional PTO to send power to the haldex AWD unit if so equipped.

re-checking the FSM for the trans plug, it doesn't say what size, but specifies tightening to 9NM(81 in-lbs)
he states the draincock should be 19mm, but he just normally uses pliers.
i was able to do it today. i put in motorcraft gold, the last time, it was done by a quick lube and the coolant that came out was green so i flushed it, cuz green and motorcraft gold can't mix, right? anyways, is green or prestone ok too or no? mixing is a no no when it comes to coolants unless they are the same, as in zerex g05 and motorcraft gold can mix but not prestone and motorcraft gold, correct?
it was 19 mm. thankfully, i had a socket of that size, it was the largest size in my kit!
and on a side note, i did a drain and fill on the transmission fluid. there was a drain plug, i didn't notice it before and tried to drop the pan but it was disatrous and i couldn't reach the upper ones, so with a drain plug, that's nice, for the trans. but even if you do a drain and fill on your trans every few months in succession to get all the fluid out, should you still drop the pan or have someone drop the pan to change the filter, or do the filters last a long time? i only know how to
use the drain plug for coolant. not sure where or what the lower radiator hose is. for me,the drain plug is the simplest. it was hard to get to. i hardly fit a socket in there, but then i loosened and retightened it by hand and nothing's leaking out now.
it's easy to get to by hand, but with a socket wrench or a regular automotive wrench, it's quite a struggle. tightening it by hand is good enough, like for an oil filter, or is that not tight enough and you need a wrench, like the drain plug for your oil, which isn't tight enough if you tighten it by hand and you must tighten it by wrench? i'd just like to know, because i dont want to find out the hard way a few days from now that hand tight isn't enough for a ford and then coolant leaks out. for the camry, it's a different shape and you hand tighten it, but i was just curious about the ford
and it seems most recent fords do have a similar drain plug for the coolant, it's "glwo in the dark" colored or light yellowish plasticky colored, and it's19 mm, but i'm wondering, do you have to tighten it by hand or no? thanks.

so i decided to flush it with water (didnt' use any flush chemicals)
that was OK, right? I did like 10 iterations
i'd add plug the drain plug up, addd water, then turn the car on and run it for 5 minutes, then turn the car off and then pull the drain plug and let the water come out for a few minutes, and then plug it up and add water again 10times
i didn't use any prestone flush/flush chemicals
was that ok, or should you use prestone/any other brand coolant flush? the old coolant was greenish and it was also reddish and green, so maybe it was a MIXED chemical which is bad, so i had to flush that out before using genuine motorcraft gold. now, the coolant looks gold for the most part and then on the final run, i added a gallon of distilled water, let it run, and drained that out, and then i mixed my own 50/50, but i heard that due to water that may remain in the system, you want more coolant than water to maintain a 50/50 mix, so i had 2 gallons of coolant, i poured half a gallon of pure coolant in, and then added distilled water to the rest of the half gallon to have a 50/50 mix. then i added a little bit of distileld water, and then i added my whole gallon of 50/50 mix i made and I almost used all of it and thne the coolant reservoir fileld up. i still have some left over.
as you drive, the coolant level should decrease, esp with a lot of turns, so then tonight, top off the coolant reservoir and you're all set, right? you have to top if off after driving it for a while after the flush because the coolant level would drop, right? hand tighening it is enough, right? or is that too risky and it might leak and you should tighten it further with a wrench? thanks.

and the mix isn't necessarily 50/50 and a hydrometer reading isn't accurate after pouring it in. you have to drive it for a while and top it off with my reamining 50/50 mix and the drive it a little more to let it mix before i can accurately get a hydrometer reading of the degree of protection, correct? and would prestone work in this car or is motorcraft gold or zerex g05 gold the way to go? if prestone won't work, than what is prestone or peak (blue bottle) good for? they are green colored and claim to be "universal" coolants.

ok, so i just read something about radiator hoses, etc
can you flush without touching the hose, as i didn't touch any hoses and i just used water and did successive drain and fills after running the water thru the system, and then did my final fill with more coolant than water.

i see, but is hand tight enough or no? you need to use a wrench to tighten it further, and by how much after you've hand tightened it, and do you need to flush by using the lower radiator hose or is flushing with the drain plug open enough? this car has a new system or pressurized system rather than a tranditional coolint system, right as the radiator cap is also the coolant fill reservoir?
