Downside of oversize filter

Just went from an OEM Toyota filter to an oversize Fram Ultra XG3600 and can hear a ticking sound at starup that lasts for a minute and wasn't there previously.

Thinking about it, wouldn't an oversize filter take longer to fill up at startup and cause a longer unlubricated lapse than a smaller filter?

Did you go from a filter with an ADBV to one without?

Edit: I checked, and the XG3600 has one...

So, the filter should be full on startup. Filter volume shouldn't matter...

No, I believe both the Toyota 90915-YZZD3 and Fram Ultra XG3600 have an ADBV.

If it were low oil pressure ticking, it would get quiet in less than a minute.

Exhaust manifold leaks, however, take about a minute to quiet down...

Where is the ticking coming from?

Might want to put a stethoscope on it...

Hard to tell where it was coming from, I was driving. Engine is 4 years old.
But back to my original question, there has to be a point where a bigger filter takes too long to get the oil flowing right?

Yes it takes longer to fill up it's a larger filter but not longer than the it takes to deplete the zddp layer on metal parts, and after the first oil change its going to be full

No..

the filter is and will always be full and charged with oil because of the ADBV, once that engine starts oil is supplied immediately.

consider the new filter has a similar construction to the OEM I don't see it to be a problem. Ultimately I don't feel a tick for a minute is a big issue but keeping the OEM filter will give you the warm and fuzzies I stay stick with it. It is what the factory approved.

what oil?

I have been having mysteriously noisy engines after oil changes since the advent of VVti.

Something is getting jammed up on a drain down and refill.

Pull the filter, empty it the best you can (don't wash it down!) clean gasket and reinstall.

also make sure oil isn't overfilled. - that can case a clacking sound on some engines at cold idle.

Ok thanks, that must be it.

The Fram Ultra has a history of good ADBV correct?

Yes they use silicone and seat against smooth steel end discs as long as it's aligned right it should seal good. Every manufacturer has put out a dude here or there right misaligned valves though, so always inspect if possible before installation

Good tip.

So was this ticking only notice on the first start-up after the oil change? What about cold starts the next day?

If the filters angles base down then the center tube drains out and a larger filter takes more time to refill after a start. Try it, fill a filter with oil then turn it upside down. Gravity has to pull the oil back to the oil pan. If the galleries on the outlet side are above the filter maybe not. Every filter I have taken off that is base angled down has an empty outlet pipe. Oil went bye bye down the hole.

I have had issues with start up ticking with the Fram Ultra on my truck. And as I recal I remember one other that experienced the same issue. Don't remember who it was at the moment, I'll have to go back and see if I can find that post. Anyways, went back to ACDelco and no more start up noise.

Same oil, same viscosity.

Yes, filter is base down, but I thought the ADBV would prevent oil from draining down. When I pulled the previous OEM filter after sitting overnight it was still full of oil.
