I'm applying for a commercial delivery job, and they sent me for a drug test. The guy looks st the sample and said that it is "too dilute. I'm gonna send it on because I have too, but they're going to write the report and tell them it was dilute."

What's going to happen?

Yes, I have noticed that in all my years of drinking water and subsequently urinating.

Yes thats the problem, you were too hydrated. Thats what they mean by dilute. Back off the water a few hours before the test and you wont have that problem. The issue is people try to finesse the test by either drinking a lot of water or straight adding water to the bottle thinking they will cause everything to read low. When the lab pops it for too dilute, you will have to take it again.

Hopefully they will allow you to retest. If you sample isn't within a predetermined range then they may flag is as tampered.

I work in a safety sensitive job where everyone who applies knows the rules of the road. Even then, 40% of all applicants fail the initial drug test and are rejected for employment.

At a previous employer, I managed our FAA Substance Abuse Testing Program; included in that was a pre-employment screening requirement. I worked directly with the same lab director for several years and discussed various details of the actual physical testing process and what the results mean. A visual check is needed prior to seal, that may be the basis for the person's comment about dilute. When the actual results come back, and if they do show dilute, that is determined by the creatinine levels in your urine. When a pre-employment screen or actual employee screen came back dilute we were required to retest the person with simple instructions not to drink liquids in excess prior to testing. Hope this info helps; my experience has shown that a dilute sample is not a big deal...I hope your prospective employer simply requires a retest.

That's weird. I drink a lot of water and every drug test samle has come in mostly clear. The test person usually comments that it's good I drink enough water.

I can not remember if / when I have taken a " pee " test . Have worked for the same company ( it changed owner when the founder retired & sold it ) since 1980 or 1981 .

Last time the boss had the employees test , he told me I did not have to take it .

Thing is , I take drugs , prescription drugs . I am an old geezer with my share of health problems . If I did test , the machine would probably display " Tilt " and ring a bell ! :-)

Don't worry about it. The guy shouldn't have even said anything to you. These jokers always think you are trying to cheat the test.(some are). If you are clean there isn't much they can say or do.
I have been doing DOT random testing for 35+ years.

I don't do drugs or Alcohol . When I had to do drug testing for the CDL I would always over hydrate! I am a rebel and I will never ever be any good !

If you have ever had a kidney or bladder stone, you WILL learn to drink and eat the right stuff. I ride with a gentleman who has, we stop every 15 minutes in the summer and he drinks and or pees. He really likes how I can fit a small cooler in my pannier. I have encouraged him to get a Camelbac. He would still have to stop. We could get him a truckers buddy and make him ride sweep.

Being in aviation, I've been drug/alcohol tested for the last 35 years. Not once has there been an issue of any sort. Although the fear of a false positive is always there.

Take Vitamin C the morning before the test. It' s a great antioxidant by the way. If you don't do illegal drugs, you have no worries! Looking at it isn't exactly scientific. It's the results. Unless you like poppy seeds. Lol! I'm sure you will be fine.

No idea what this guy was talking about. I did DOT and non-DOT drug screens for several years and you can't tell anything by just looking at it except for how much they drink.
They do specific tests to see if it is tap water, but otherwise I have never seen a drug test invalid due to being "too dilute".

So what happens if it comes back dilute again?
