Dont touch my junk!

Obviously there were a few people who dreamed and realized our passenger planes could be used as missiles. Still why give someone a chance with a Swiss Army knife, box cutter, pocket knife, etc.? A lot easier to fight someone w/o a knife than someone with one, and I'm speaking from experience as a Martial Arts Instructor. Many people talk the talk until faced with the danger. I'm willing to bet there in a situation with a knife vs. one w/o a knife there will be a lot braver people if there are no knives involved. Once someone is threatened with a knife, or actually cut with one, things change, fast. Had the terrorists been stopped before entering the planes none of it would have gone down. We can speculate all we want, it is all history now. I think the screening, profiling, scans, pat-downs etc. is a step in the right direction. Is it fool proof? No way, better I'd say so. JMO

As far is the water system goes, you are spot on! We are talking airlines and touching junk. Messing up water, the subway system, a bridge, tunnel, stadium, etc. are all possible targets and something for another topic.

didnt they make claims that they would bring the plane down if not given access? I was under the impression that the theory was that it was better to be hijacked than blown up, so boxcutters got them in... maybe that is all wrong.

Those who actually worry about a guy or girl handling their "stuff" really think too much of themselves. This is a volume business, and I highly doubt anyone will get their jollies.

It is ALL about doing it to everyone or doing it to those who fit a specific profile, or doing it to nobody. Im OK with the first two.

I received the following email that is a simple solution to the problem. Made me laugh.

Airport Security Solution -
Here's the solution to all the controversy over full-body scanners at the airports:

Have a booth that you can step into that will not x-ray you, but will detonate any explosive device you may have on your body. It would be a win-win for everyone, and there would be none of this talk about racial profiling and this method would eliminate a long and expensive trial. Justice would be quick and swift.
This is so simple that it's brilliant. I can see it now. You're in the airport terminal and you hear a muffled explosion. Shortly thereafter an announcement comes over the PA system, "Attention standby passengers. We now have a seat available on flight number 4665.....
Paging maintenance – a shop vac is needed at Security Booth 4."

That's pretty good Johnny, it really is a shame that it can't be done though. You see the would-be bombers have rights.

I'm in favor of the Israeli method of securing airlines.

*******

CNN: What needs to be done to improve the system?

Yeffet: It's mandatory that every passenger -- I don't care his religion or whatever he is -- every passenger has to be interviewed by security people who are qualified and well-trained, and are being tested all year long. I trained my guys and educated them, that every flight, for them, is the first flight. That every passenger is the first passenger. The fact that you had [safe flights] yesterday and last month means nothing. We are looking for the one who is coming to blow up our aircraft. If you do not look at each passenger, something is wrong with your system.

CNN: Let's say all the airlines instituted the system that you're talking about. So let's say I go to an airport for a flight to London. What should happen

Yeffet: When you come to the check-in, normally you wait on line. While you wait on line, I want you to be with your luggage. You have to meet with me, the security guy. We tell you who we are. We ask for your passport, we ask for your ticket. We check your passport. We want to find which countries you visited. We start to ask questions, and based on your answers and the way you behave, we come to a conclusion about whether you are bona fide or not. That's what should happen

CNN: Every passenger should be interviewed, on all flights?

Yeffet: Yes, 100 percent...
I want to interview you. It won't take too long if you're bona fide

CNN: What do you think of using full body scanners?

Yeffet: I am against it, this is once again patch on top of patch. Look what happened, Richard Reid, the shoebomber, hid the explosives in his shoes. The result -- all of us have to take off our shoes when we come to the airport. The Nigerian guy hid his explosives in his underwear. The result -- everyone now will be seen naked. Is this the security system that we want?

Say what you want, this method has gotten results

How the Israelis do airport security

I still think my tyvek suit approach with only three items per person (heavily scrutinized) is the best option.

I have yet to see any data that supports that what the government is subjecting us to is actually catching any terrorists.

A pilot said in an interview I read that everyone touching the plane you fly on is not required to go through inspection at the start of their shift. The fuel guy, the baggage handlers, the maintenance crew- none of them. If this is going to work then ALL areas need screening, not just the passengers.

" . . . there are civil liberties at stake." Exactly! People seem not to care about civil rights and are willing to give them up for "security".
Personally I'm not so sure the x-ray or pat down WOULD have stopped 9/11.

How easy would it be for terrorists to have a baggage handler or the people that clean the plane to put something on the plane - be it a small bomb, weapon, etc. With assigned seating a terrorist could tell him to put this under seat 12a and here is a 200.00 for your trouble.

Anybody remember seeing a show on CNBC (I think) about the airline industry and in this case American Airlines?
The airlines make a good chunk of their money by hauling freight and most if not all of it is NOT screened before it is put on the plane.
Edit: Here is a link to the show I mentioned:
http://www.cnbc.com/id/18576787/

They state the NONE of the mail they haul (USPS) gets inspected and only about 10 percent of the cargo.

Personally I think most of this is meant to make people FEEL or THINK they are secure. I don't feel any safer now getting on an airplane than I did before 9/11 - it's just now there is more annoyance and wasted time involved in flying.

I read the blog by the guy that started all this and he said that one of the security agents told him: (I'm paraphrasing) After 9/11 you gave up your rights. To which he replied - No the government TOOK those rights.

In my opinion most airport security is not much more than a warrantless search. But it's a "right" most people give up in hopes of being "safe".

Getting "groped" and such was a standard practice for international flights since 9/11. Quite unsettling but it's part of the scare tactics against terrorism.

Having flown to England at the height of their war with the IRA, I am used to "extensive" screening of the passengers and intimidating police tactics. It's part of the game.

The world has changed and not for the better. JMO

Not sure that this is true. Prior to 9/11 very few Americans would have dreamed that a hijacked airliner would be used as a piloted missile. Had they understood, I doubt any of the planes would have made it to their targets as the passengers and crew would most likely have interfered with the hijackers.

True. Plus the single most USEFUL security change post 9/11 (secure cockpit doors) renders pocket knives and boxcutters perfectly safe to have on airplanes- if would-be hijackers can't get to the pilots, they can't force them to bring down the plane nor can they take control. Period. That was really the only change that was needed. That, and we should put far more money and research into passive chemical scanning to detect explosive components, not potentially harmful millimeter wave or X-ray backscatter scanning to produce images that still can't reveal every hidden chemical a person could carry...

Again, I know others will disagree and that's fine with me.

Nope, I really don’t see a pattern here to justify profiling, do you?

So, to ensure we Americans never offend anyone, particularly fanatics intent on killing us, airport security screeners will no longer be allowed to profile certain people. They must conduct random searches of 80-year-old women, little kids, airline pilots with proper identification, secret agentsof the President’s security detail, 85-year old Congressmen with metal hips, and Medal of Honor winning and former Governor Joe Foss, but leave
Muslim Males between the ages 17 and 40 alone because of profiling.

+1. When it is no longer PC to profile who is most likely to be the criminal, then everyone must be treated suspect like the criminal. Pretty inefficient and inconvenient. Maybe if the group that the perpetrators predominatley come from are inconvenienced then they'll put pressure on the bad ones within their identity group.

Security Theater. That's all it is. As long as the TSA is in charge then it'll never really amount to much more than giving them a reason to take a dump on even more of our liberties in the name of security. A security that doesn't really exist.

As fort my opinion. The govt./TSA needs to get out og the airport and put security in the hands of the airlines themselves. A business doesn't have the smae stupid PC rules to follow that the govt. does. They can profile, refuse service, pick their customers. The govt. can't do that.

The govt. can't really do anything right in any smart way. It's been proven over and over again. Let the airlines protect themselves, be that hiring more security themselves or hiring a private entity to cover it for them. Either way it would be more efficient, cheaper, and more effective.

I thought the security companies involved 9 years ago WERE private security firms.

My recent trip to the states.

Sydney, taken aside for luggage/personnel swab, special pat down, and a lab (well beagle) test.

LAx I got nearly nekkid, while Mrs got the pat down, including boob creases (desn't fly with a bra, thank goodness, the underwire might have had us there for a week).

JFK, half nekkid again. shoes in one box, laptop in another, phone in another, GPS in another, wallet in another.

Note, each time, I was no longer in charge of my passport, and there seemed to be no real control of where it was going, and call backs for more scans even more worrying.

SFO, got the millimetre wave (there was an option not to ???,and a sign telling me what my dose was ???), and as I was heading home, had the passport in front right pocket...prompting another metal detector, and a standoff on who was emptying my pocket, followed by a groping.

Honestly, I was less offended by the US stuff than the Oz stuff...no-one made me go there.

My Sis and parents saved up for a trip a month or two ago.

Sis is in a wheelchair, has a urostomy (and thus a bag of liquid strapped to her leg, and reckons that the check between the chair and her person gave her an itchy throat, and the desire to step outside for a post coital smoke.

The problem is the government imposes its same stupid PC rules on business. Sometimes it's even worse. Also the special interest groups would start activism because some airline's security did something that isn't PC.

I find much of the safety talk nonsense. In no way am I going to agree with an X-ray of my entire body just to get from point A to B. I refuse to be reminded of an early 1800s slave trade auction. Are they going to check my teeth too?

Most of the tactics being used cannot be proven to help anyone, but rather makes it difficult for civil people. To me, terrorism has won when civil people remove civility in order to conduct their daily lives.

An event in our past should not sway us into thinking we can eliminate those events from the future. Instead, why not prepare for them in other ways? People took over a plane with simple hand instruments - I have a serious problem with that.

I say put a few BITOG members on each flight with a trusty ball-peen hammer and this problem of transportation safety is solved.

They should just let everybody get on the plane with nothing more than the old metal detectors and bomb dogs. I like a gamble, and at some point you have to decide whether you'd take a one in a million chance of dying in a plane crash or get on the plane without a dude grabbin' your junk. I choose to not get my junk grabbed.
