Don't over tighten your spin-on oil filter!

I have had to use a screwdriver , also .

On two occasions over the years I had to run a screwdriver through a filter. One of the times I almost wound up chiseling the thing off but got it off pretty shredded.

I had similar instance last year on a recently acquired motorcycle. Oil filter was done by a bear, had to drill and use hammer and screw driver to break it open.

I can feel the pain....

Don't over-tighten ANYTHING. Something will break if you do, and whatever that is might not be as easy to repair as replacing your oil filter.

This is mechanics 101. And not limited to automobiles. Some people should never touch a tool.

i have only changed a few hundred oil filters. reg spin on. 3/4-16. with clean parts i put a thin coat of grease on the the gasket. and tighten ONLY 3/4 turn. NEVER HAD trouble.

I knew an old guy who tried the chisel trick on an overtightened filter on his Chevy (Suzuki) Sprint. The chisel slipped and hit the block, punching a hole into an oil passage.

Agreed: tighten 3/4 turn (or whatever is on the box instructions). Our 2009 5.4 F150 factory filter was one of the tightest I’ve had to deal with. I was warned online that a gorilla installed the factory filters so I was ready...

Last one that I had a real problem was put on my a quick lube place AND it was on a dead guy's truck and the vehicle isn't driven much so it was on the truck for years. I'm not sure which was worse, potential torge put on the the quick lube place, or the fact that it has been on there so long.
