A friend of mine, who lives in Houston, sent me this picture of what was left of his spin-on oil filter after he finally got it off the car. Left me pretty much speechless. He should call whoever over tightened it and let them get it off.
Ouch! I've had to stab in a screwdriver to get a stuck filter off before, but he had to shred that thing to remove it. What was it installed with, a rattle gun?!
I think the gasket is deliberately made of a type of rubber that swells in contact with oil. They are always harder to get off than the originally tightening torque would suggest. Anyone who has removed a filter that they put on themselves will know this. You would think the trade would know it too.
Modern cartridge filters that use an O ring seal that is largely independent of tightening torque are a big step forward.
Memorial Day Weekend a year ago-after messing for a couple of hours trying to loosen a spin-on on a jetski I chased down one of these. Had it off in 15 seconds or less.

Lisle make many useful items but this not as good as many others of the same principle. They cost more but are worth it.
