Anyone have any experience with donating vehicles to high schools? Specifically to the auto shop departments?
My father owns a '94 Grand Cherokee that he wants to get rid of. Starts, runs and drives great and has some old offroad meats and armor on it to. Usual 20yo car wear and tear.
Tried to sell it on CL but get the usual "I come now for $100". Junkyard down the road is offering $300.
So we got a request from a guy at a local high school, saying he works for the auto shop class. My father thought it'd be a great idea, more for his tax write off, and donate the old girl to educate some kids. So I asked the guy some specific questions such as, are you a 501(c)3? How is the vehicle appraised? How long do I have to wait to get the receipt?
He responded, with poor spelling, we always give a lot to those willing to help the school and stopped at that. I'm trying to avoid driving 2 cars over there and then being handed a receipt that doesn't even cover gas.
It's a large well known HS in the suburbs. Anyone have any experience with this? Perhaps I should call the main office or see if there is a more knowledgeable person that works the auto section? Anything I should look out for?
Welcome any thoughts.
