I took the pads out last night and they got mixed up on the work bench.Have you got it apart already? Don't the pads fit just one way?
Wear indicator was $90. That’s why I took them apart. “Brake Wear” light came on. I tried to solder it but couldn’t.Won't they only go in one way, since the pins slide in the top? I have a 2006 but both our cars have fixed calipers. If I recall there's a cutout for the brake wear sensor but it's only used on one side. that part is so expensive I used the old ones since they were not tripped yet. Also I learned Lexus says you have to replace the caliper bolts every time if removed, and if car purchased used all the shims are missing. BMW is much cheaper lol
There is a Raybestos aftermarket...I picked them up but did not install. With BMW, you can get OEM for $12, i.e. the same part as OE, without the BMW box. Shame Toyota marks up like that.Wear indicator was $90. That’s why I took them apart. “Brake Wear” light came on. I tried to solder it but couldn’t.
The chamfer almost certainly faces the leading edge.
I just heard back from Lexus. You are correct. And the leading edge on my car has the cut outs in the down position. The chamfer almost certainly faces the leading edge.
Best price I could find in my area was $60. I decided to go with the OEM.There is a Raybestos aftermarket...I picked them up but did not install. With BMW, you can get OEM for $12, i.e. the same part as OE, without the BMW box. Shame Toyota marks up like that.

If the pads are chamfered on both sides (like Akebono), use the slot for the wear indicator as the guide.
I did it right! Excellent. Thank you!Late to the party as usual; '98 Lexus LS400 FSM:

Do the OEM shims fit aftermarket pads ? Aftermarket pads don't need to be 100% identical in shape to fit, just as long as the "ears" are the same, there can be some minor variation in the shape and enough that the OEM shims might not match up perfectly. If the shims are just flat plates, even if they're bigger or smaller, I guess they'd be fine. If they have hooks that wrap around the metal backing plate though, they'd better be 100% matched in size.I noticed without the shims, there was a clunk sound on my car because the pads could shift ever so slightly (Toyota has 8 per axle and they are always gone if a muffler shop did the brakes--tossed with the old pads, instead of moved to the new).
