Does anyone know why dogs prefer to drink water out of the toilet bowl rather than the clean stuff that's in their dish?

They know the best.

"Clean" water in their bowls contains chlorine and stinks. A puddle doesn't, and has valuable minerals, and maybe is gonna keep the immune system tuned up as well.

We don't have spring water in our toilets. I do however agree that it is a taste issue. Mmm, flavorful toilet water! BAROOO!

Maybe because it's bigger. Would you drink from a puddle if there's a lake nearby?

Tap water is the same as toilet water - same chlorine, fluorides, etc.

Squishy, a lot of the chlorine gasses off as the toilet is flushed. You can smell it while it's flushing often.

Dog's only do that if they have no water in the water bowl. At least that is how it's been for our dogs.

Most American toilet water is blue.

Cats seem to like toilet water, too: Don't fall in, kitty!

My cat won't drink water unless it has been sitting in a large bowl (usually fish bowl) or unless it is running water. My dogs will drink anything liquid that forms into a puddle. In the winter they eat snow.

Toilet water is often cooler than water that's been sitting in a dish. Or so I hear.
And taller dogs may feel more comfortable drinking from the toilet since it's usually higher than their dish.
That said, I had a Norwegian Elkhound, an Irish Wolfhound, and two German Shepherds, all slept inside, none of them touched toilet water, even though it was readily available....

It's odd, our previous dog didn't do it much but this one will even go to the toilet bowl in preference to new filtered water fresh in the dish given half a chance.

Thinking about it, the water in the toilet is about 18" to 20" down from the seat, and the area of the water is around 6" square...how do the mutts drink out of that ?

The typical American toilet is only 15" from floor to seat level. The water level is about 7" below the seat. These toilets are no thrones! And dogs do have long tongues.

That's unreal.
Down here, we only have water up to the small square/rectangular section that you can see way below the tideline shown there.

How much water is required to flush those things ?

Im not a scatologist, but the current law in California says the limit is 1.6 gallons per flush. A new proposition wants to set a limit of 1.3 gallons. There's no law (yet) on how often you may flush.

I have never seen a pressure assist toilet in the US. They need a fraction of the water a low flow toilet rerquires. They also don't have that silly water tank (which tends to sweat and easily become a breeding ground for mold).

I would've thought you'd need more...our dunnies use as much or more, and we've got many water changes per flush.
