Yes, this is a dumb project. Yes, it's more work than it's worth. Yes, yes yes. I hear you. I'm doing it anyways.

So I recently inherited a dog and she is SUPER hyper. Wants to play ALL day. So I had this crazy idea to create a pulley system across the room that would allow me to attach a toy and just pull the ends of the rope to pull the toy back and forth, so I can focus on the game and get the dog the exercise it wants.

I've mounted the pulleys and ran the string, but it doesn't work. The rope won't stay taut and against the ceiling. I need a way to keep the string taut but be able to pull the ropes and move the toy back and forth across the room. I majored in healthcare in college, not mechanical engineering, so help!

Here are a few pictures:

1 pulley in the kitchen, another in the living room, from the living room pulley I've run each side of string through 2 separate pulleys above my recliner as to be able to pull back and forth.

I'm thinking I may need a couple double pulleys or something. I just need the rope to stay taught but also allow me to move it about 25 feet. This may not even be possible but I know there's some engineers around here.

That's certainly...different. Wouldn't it be easier to take your dog for a couple of walks each day? Keeping them active and entertained is part of every responsible pet owners daily life-that doesn't include sitting in a recliner and pulling a rope while you're watching soap operas.

At least you wouldn't have a Mississippi clothes line running around the inside of your house.

The dog does get walked every single day, gets played with all the time, I rescued this dog and just shelled out $700 for a spay and 8 teeth pulled and she still needs more stuff.

I am a responsible pet owner. Don't judge what you don't know.

Maybe it needs a spring loaded counter weight.

What does your wife say about your set up ?

I can commiserate with your plight. After a full day at work you come home spent and the dog is raring to go.

With my dog, I'd throw the ball around the house and against the wall.

I like the attempt to help your dog. How big? It looks kinda weak so that a big dog would tear that off the ceiling. How about just a long tug rope to play tug of war? Caeser Malon or however you spell his name always recommends a tread mill.

Good news is, the spaying will slow her down somewhat, it did to my somewhat hyper female Chihuahua/Dachsund mix dog. Also, no substitute for a fenced-in yard to run them around in!

You might want to consider a child's short rod & reel, with a dog toy tied on the line. Might even find one used at Goodwill, etc. Or teach the dog to retrieve.

Oh please, this website would have nothing but tumbleweeds if people did that.

(Nice setup, and kudos for rescuing.)

LOL all he does is judge......and talk positive about himself.

interesting and creative setup. did you actually (hopefully) screw those into wood? or are they just into the drywall/stucco? if they are not into wood, I imagine the hooks will work loose without too much pressure.

can you motorize it?

and what kind of oil did you use on the pulleys?
