My wife and I took in a stray beagle three months ago. She was a sweet dog who enjoyed playing with our lab and pitbull. She had heartworms which we just finished treating for and also was beginning her heat cycle. 3 weeks ago the cycle started to end (evident by her no longer having an interest in the two males in the house). However, her temperament has completely change. The sweet beagle we found has turned into a lethargic, [censored], and biting dog. If this something that will pass, or do I have larger problems on my hands?

Yes...get her fixed if you plan to keep her long term. I sure wish my neighbor's would have done that to their blue healer but no.......she's pregnant again for about the 6th time.
Wouldn't be so bad if they took care of the dog and puppies but most of the time...nature takes care of the excess puppies. They have three little rat looking terriers in the house and the healer plus a male from her last litter, outside.
So unless you plan to breed her....get her spayed.

Before the heartworm treatment began 3 months ago, the vet said she was not pregnant. My lab mix mounted her once while she was in heat, but he was neutered 3 years ago so I'm assuming there is no way he could get her pregnant. I called the vet and explained her temperament. I was told they have never heard of the heartworm treatment making a dog mean. I only got to talk to a tech, not a vet. So the only thing I can link this to is her cycle. She was such a sweet dog when we found her, I really hope this is just a phase.
A dog's temperament can change while in heat. Mine usually gets mopey and depressed. She's going on 10 years old. She had a heat cycle around Feb and she just started another one a few days ago. It can be a mess. If she's young and healthy, get her fixed. Keep in mind it's considered major surgery.
bigmike, that is exactly how my dog is acting. Just lays around and looks miserable most of the time. She has short lived moments of energy and activity, but mostly acts the way you described. I'll call the vet and see how soon I can schedule the surgery.
She is drinking fine. She has been eating a little less, however her weight is staying the same.

That's what happened to my German Shepherd when I had her fixed. After a day or so, she was bouncing off the walls again!
She is the most loveable dog.....to the family and people she knows. Otherwise....stay back!
