might be stupid question.

i wax my sub with duragloss. its beading well, but i still get water spots. washing the car does not remove them.

so whats going on?

It will not prevent them entirely, but a layer of wax means water will be more likely to roll-off and hence not leave spots. A very flat surface, like the roof, will still have water sit on it regardless.

Probably need a sealant that sheets the water. Which ones are KNOWN to do that?

Meg's Ultimate Paste Wax sheets the [censored] out of water.

In my experience, the wax doesn't prevent water spots entirely, but it sure makes them easier to remove.

On an unwaxed vehicle, I've had water spots require polishing and/or rubbing compound to remove completely. With a properly waxed surface, this is not an issue, just wash the car again and the water spots are history with very little effort.

When you wash the car you need to dry it. If you don't dry it then the water you used to rinse the car will leave water spots.

Few things:
1. To properly take care of your finish you must dry it. Period. End of story. If you must wash your car in the sun, wash the whole thing and rinse the whole thing at one time. The soap drying on the finish may appear alarming but it will neutralize the hard water and prevent spots from happening. It WILL rinse right off when you're ready.

2. Rain water may make spots out of existing dirt but it won't leave hard water spots on your car as it's essentially distilled water.

3. Try the following final rinse technique (inline hose shutoff valve needed): take your nozzle off and just let the thick stream of hose water rinse off the car. The water will mostly sheet right off since there aren't thousands of individual droplets hitting the finish and sticking to it (surface tension). This will make your drying job VERY easy.

4. Keep it protected. There is no "magic bullet" product that will do what you want but a protected finish has a leg up for whatever it encounters.

I got kitacam with a few scratches included in the price so I'm not OCD about the finish...and...

A few times a week I drag a towel over the roof/hood/trunk and windows to remove morning dew...and dirt that dew collects...it makes a big difference in keeping the finish clean and the lasting longer..

I use simple spray wax (FW1 brand with carnauba) that still beads nicely for nearly to 4 months now...
