I just bought a 10 year old used car and I used Meguiars Cleaner Wax for the first coat. I was left with large beads on the whole car.
What can I do to get the next product to give me small beads? Thanks for your help

Agreed with the advice @JohnnyG gave.

The current American car care culture is all about the beading results from waxing a car. Why does that matter? What really matters, at least to me, is the shine and dirt repellence.

That said, you may try a second coat, and see if that helps. But if you still aren't happy with the results, perhaps what you need to do is start over, to really get the paint clean before applying wax.

  • Use a stronger car wash detergent, such as Dawn or Palmolive dish detergent, to strip off the wax you just applied.
  • Follow up with a clay bar cleaning treatment, to get all the years of dirt that doesn't come off from the car wash.
  • Wash the car again, to clean off the detailer spray and any left over clay. This is just a quick wash, rinse and dry.
  • Wax again with a quality wax.

If you are into the warm look of a good carnauba wax, I strongly recommend Collinite 845. It will definitely give you that hydrophobic repellence that you are looking for, and will last longer than most all other carnauba waxes.

The only disadvantage to Collinite 845 is that it can take some real elbow grease to remove, if you don't follow the instructions, and buff it off fairly promptly after it hazes over. But if you follow the directions, applying only to smaller areas and not getting too far ahead with the application, before going back to buff it off, it is easy to use. When I say easy, as easy as any other paste. Also, warm up the bottle of wax in a sink of hot water before waxing the car, to soften the wax to where it is easier to dispense out of the bottle, as more of a thick liquid, rather than a paste.

I don't know anyone who has ever been dissatisfied with the results from Collinite 845. It is definitely worth the few extra $ over the Mother's and Meguiars offerings.

What kind of protection are you looking for in terms of months, aside from small beading? I would suggest a carnauba / synthetic polymer 'hybrid' or 'fusion' paste wax.

Just to keep apples to apples, since you already used Meguiar's Cleaner Wax, they make these

NuFinish, the non-ceramic version. Available at Walmart for like $10. You'll be very pleased.
Do you ever apply NuFinish with a DA polisher? I know that it is advertised as being a hand-only product mostly, but I wonder what the results could be with a machine application.
