What was the question

That was a good article. Unfortunately I wasn't able to concentrate on finishing it because of all the links and ads on its web page.

I think the title of the article is misleading. The internet is a tool, and how a person utilizes it determines the results of using it. It doesn't make anybody do anything. From what that author stated, it sounds more like people with ADD or poor thinking skills. Although it obviously is a pop article, he should have cited the studies a little more specifically. You can easily pull sentences from anything to make it say what you want it to. The studies cited could say what the author says, but they usually state their limitations and methods.

I think the internet is great for people who know how to use it correctly for information gathering. It would be more painful than it is without a search engine to find journal articles for all the research papers that I've had to write. The availability of information makes learning much easier. I find myself looking up things that I'm interested in all the time. All it takes is initiative and the info you need is at your fingertips. I also find people with a wide knowledge base more interesting than someone who can only talk about one subject. Not to mention many subjects can be related to each other and knowing a few can help understand one. I hope I made sense (it's 3AM after all).

There is such a thing called adblock plus.

I have absolutely become better mechanically thanks to confidence I found after reading other "regular joes" doing stuff on the internet. (and taking really good pictures including rust and homemade tools-- not like the FSM line drawings.) My own circle of "real humans" are full of idiocy and old wive's tales, like checking an alternator by disconnecting the battery. My parents wanted me to go to college and become a cubicle dweller so I didn't pick up much from them.

Ironically I'm typing this at work, my paying job gives me time to learn stuff I can use as a hobby. What a country.

"Loyal Moronicans should not read, suppose you learn something!" - Moe Howard

This topic reminded me of the 3-stooges episode where Moe inpersonated Hitler (one of several episodes actually) and ordered Curley to burn all of the books (except his little black book).

They just don't make comdey shorts like those anymore.

I think the internet makes it easier to collect facts and use them, but I think gaining understanding isn't as easy. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think the internet helps kids learn and understand calculus? I bet its easy to find what type of questions will be asked online but can more kids use calculus to solve a problem now, than in 1989? I doubt it.

That doesn't necessarily make you dumber though. One thing I oppose doing online is taking classes. There are so many college courses offered online now, but I think the lack of a instructor physically being present, detracts from the learning experience.
