Does RP owe me a new rear?

No wonder so many ppl are buying [censored] cars nowadays, so sad.

I honestly think most manufacturers don't say change the trans/differential fluids more frequently because even with longer drivetrain warranies most will last to outside the year/mileage warranty before they puke, even when one is especially negligent in their maintenance habits. And many people start contemplating getting a new vehicle pretty much as soon as the last one is paid off. To look at some people I know they don't even wait that long, and then a dodgy diff or trans becomes owner number two's problem.

But personally, I like "paid for", so I always do a 2 year/30K schedule on diff and trans fluids. I may go a bit longer with power steering and coolant, but not much. I've been doing this for the better part of 20 years and knock wood its served me well.

I drive a Ford F-150 company truck and just for the heck of it, I looked in the owners manual of it, which has about the same towing capacity(guess the manufacturer decides what he wants to take liabilty for). Anyway, it says in The Ford manual, that the rearend is life fill and should never need serviced for the life of the vehicle. Its a 2004 F-150 with 162,000 miles. It actaully had a wheel bearing go out, so they changed the rear differential, at 155,000 but as far as I know it still has all the original fluids in it besides engine oil. Automatic transmission, shifts smooth and Runs like a top and doesnt use a drop of oil between changes. (4.6)

Most here would advise adding the FM even if the oil has it built in...

Too much friction modifier hurts the diff clutch's ability to grab. You would only want to add additional friction modifier (if the fluid already contains it) if you observe chattering. I've used both Red Line and Severe Gear with no additional FM in Ford Trac-Lok diffs and observed zero chatter with both.

Agreed. Only add it if needed.
