Does gasket size matter?.

Hi,

I've been hunting for an oversize oil filter for my corolla. The filters that allow the most clearance under the car--and have the the bypass on the base of the filter-- all have gaskets that are larger in diameter than the gaskets that come with the suggested filters for my car. The
STP 3600
ST 3600
Bosch 3422
provide the best fit under the car, and, have similar bypass psi's(14-18 psi is recommended. The above filters are 12-15 psi). There is one thing that confuses me though. The gasket sizes on the above filters are a little bigger in diameter than the recommended filters. I bought a ST 3600 and test fitted it on my car. The gasket did not protrude beyond the filter adapter on the engine--it was flush with it though. Can I still use the larger filters. BTW, the recommended filter for purolator is L14476-tea cup sized. It seems to me that this filter would go into bypass too often due to its small size.

As long as you test fit the filter to make sure there is no leakage problems, the different gasket should be ok.

I always try to find the larger oil filters for my cars, I agree that having the smaller ones means it goes into bypass much more often.

That slight change in bypass settings is close enough that it should pose no problem IMO.

I had some problems putting a PermaCool sandwich adapter on my 4 cylinder Camry. The sandwich adapter had the standard 2 3/4 OD gasket. It leaked. The Camry has the 2 1/2 OD gasket. The old Toyotas were the same as a Ford. My Camry has a clearance problem. I could use a longer filter , not wider. I fabricated an adapter plate for the sandwich adapter. The stock Camry filter fit the adapter. With the Motor Guard submicronic bypass filter cleaning the oil I don't worry about the full flow filter. I only need to change the Fram about every two years and the Motor Guard every 4,000 miles. I won't be changing the oil.
