Does anyone have Kumho Solus KR21 tires?

All tire places charge for this stuff, but Discount Tire charges more for these services than anyone else. By the time they get done charging you all of their fees you aren't getting such a good deal. You're much better off ordering your tires from the Tire Rack, pay the shipping charges, and then take them to Wal-Mart and have them install them. Doing this, I got all 4 of my tires and had them installed for a total price of just $267.

Well I have both tirerack.com and my Discount Tire invoice in front of me so let's see how we do.

4xP215/60R-16 in Chicagoland

Tirerack:
Tires=288.00
Shipping=56.08
subtotal=344.08
Installation=?
Total=344.08 + ?

Discount Tire:
Tires=356.00
Disposal Tax=22.00
Installation=55.96
Tax=28.52
Total=462.48

So for the tirerack route to break even you would need to spend 118.40 (24.10x4+22.00) on installation & disposal. As far as I know law requires they itemize the environmental fee even if they quote it to you all together.

I'm sure you could do better than 24.10 per tire installation. Therefore, the tirerack route DOES save you money IF you don't mind waiting for the tires to show up and schlepping them around on your own after that.

I myself do not mind paying a small premium to have Discount Tire do the work as I have been dealing with them for almost ten years across several different shops and I have yet to be mistreated. I wish I could say the same about buying tires at Firestone, Sams or Sears.

No they don't. They charge 2 mandated state fees (at least here in CO) and $15/tire for installation plus lifetime rotate and balance. Out the door, at least around here, they will always beat everyone else. No questions asked. Plus, they do good work and always use a torque wrench. In fact, at the one I go to, the put the lugs on with a gun and a torque stick, then pull your car out in front, and then lock em down with a torque wrench right in front of you. I like that!!!

Tirerack has many selections, brands and sizes, the main drawback is shipping charge of more than $50 for 4 tires to most states. Treadepot.com has fewer selections but they have free ground shipping. Price wise, Treadepot price is few dollars more than Tirerack for some tires and few dollars less for other tires.

Four Kumho Solus KR21 tires would cost $284 shipped from Treadepot.com. Total cost of install 4 tires with life time balance at Walmart is about $60. Total should be $345 for 4 215/60-16 KR21's installed.

I don't mind waiting few days to have 4 tires delivered to my home, then take them to Walmart for installation to save more than $110.

The 21s are $77 at Tire rack and $67 at Discount tire. The price I stated was out the door pricing as per my post.$180 for two out the door. If I keep my old tires $176.
Treadepot $75 each.

Wow, these look like great tires, especially for all season/snow traction. The reviews on Tirerack and the survey results are better than pretty much all the other all season tires. I think I'll be going with these when my BFGs bite the dust.

I don't know how you guys are arriving at some of your prices, but by ordering my tires from the Tire Rack and having them mounted and balanced by Wal-Mart was like $75 less expensive than if I would have purchased and installed them at Discount Tire. DT is by far not the least expensive place to buy tires.

I dunno. In my tire size as of right now, they are $ 5 bucks more/tire at Discount. Installation anywhere is gonna be $20/tire where as with Discount when you buy tires there, it's $15/tire.

Add in $50 for shipping and it's $50 bucks more for me to get tires through Tirerack. I guess it depends on location.

And if you get a quote from any local tire shop for the same tire and it's less than Discount, they will match it.

I compared Costco,Tire rack, Treadepot, Walmart, and Discount tire all from the internet.
Discount Tire was the cheapest. I was pleasantly surprised. I was already to go to Costco.

That's one of the problems with DT, in order for them to price match, it has to be a local tire dealer. They won't price match the Tire Rack. Also, Wal-[censored] charges $12 per tire total for mounting and balancing ($3.50 for mounting, $5.00 for balancing, $1.50 disposal fee, and $2.00 for valve stems).

I disagree with DT not price matching. DT will price match any out the door competitor such as Tire Rack or Treadepot. I just had them price match Treadepot on four Pirelli P4's. Not only did they match the price but they beat Treadepot by 5% and I still got the free shipping in which Treadepot offers also. Them I took the tires over to my local Wal*Mart for the cheap instalation. Mounting/balancing/valvestems and tire disposal and tax = $11.88 x 4 = $47.52.....Seee Yaa!

DT rules!

When I need new rubber I call Discount Tire and ask them if they can do four tires out the door for "my" price. "My" price is the TireRack price (with shipping), I then add my local sales tax (6%), $10/tire for mouting, balancing and valves. They always say yes. When you factor in their free balancing and rotation as often as you want and free flat repair it's a no brainer - DT rules!

I don't know which DT's you guys are dealing with, but the ones I've gone to (in Dayton, OH and Romeoville, IL both said they would only price match local retailers. They would not price match the Tire Rack.

I have Solus KR21's on my car right now and I had the tire they replaced (I can't remember the number) before that. Both Kumho's were good tires but they won't last anywhere near 80K.

grampi,
Probably my mistake too! But, there are many of us here that are confusing Discount Tire Stores with discounttiredirect.com. Although,(I was told by a service rep), they are related but, they do business a little differently in the way they match competitors prices. I myself have only dealt with discounttiredirect.com.

While visiting my daughter in Phoenix, I stopped by a Discount Tire Store to price the same tires that I was considering from discounttiredirect.com and the stores are much higher in price($25.00 per tire) than online, delivered to my door in NY. I don't thing every tire at the DTS are more expensive than dtd.com and some may even be less money but, if you live near a DTS, check both prices to see if there is a difference compared to the online dtd.com also.

Put a set of 195/60/15 on a Chevy Cobalt. They balanced well and after 14,000 I would say they have about 2/3rd's tread left. No way will you get 80,000 mi. from them, but realistically around 50,000 mi. The Continentals that came on the car were junk at 16,000 mi. We do about 50/50 highway and town.

My Escort rides fairly rough the ASX's, but 205 tires on 7.5in rims probably doesn't help, neither do Ford Racing struts on stock springs. They're not noisy at all though.

I talked to the guy in charge of testing tires at the Tire Rack, he says Kumho makes great tires at a good price. (or something like that)

I think my sister had some cheap Kumhos on her car but I don't remember which ones.

Drew,
According to the tirerack reader servey results, the KR-21's do quite well in snow and ice considering they're an all-season tire and not a snow/ice tire.
