The MDS does use oil pressure to function. But you can use a "heavier" grade of oil and it will still work fine.
I have used 0w40 with no problems
How much consumption are you talking here? I would move to a 5w30 synthetic high mileage before jumping to 10w40.
Even though it is a great oil, I have experienced M1 co.sumption in some vehicles, where other oils did not use a drop. IMO before going up a grade, try a different oil for a couple of OCIs.
Also, at what mileage did it begin to use oil? Just curious there.

Don't remember exactly. It has been going on a while. I'm thinking it was somewhere around the 60000-65000 mile range.

If you want moly put Pennzoil 5w30 conventional or Pennzoil High Mileage 5w20 in it.

My charger will engage mds as soon as I reach steady speed,so within a couple minutes,when oil temps are less that 100f.
Now I guarantee you that a 5w-20 at 100f is a whole lot thicker than a 40 grade at operating temp,and mds works just fine either way.

Unless you don't mind getting less MPG going to a 10W-40 oil will just waste your gas.
Personally if you want to use a 5w30 I suppose you won't witness hardly any less MPG cuz it's not much heavier when it's hot.
If I were you I'd just stay with using Mobil 1 5W-20 and the oil filter of your choice. When I had my 01' Durango my motor didn't burn a drop of oil at all so thinking about going heavier wasn't necessary.

I haven't seen a 5.7 that didn't run excellent at 100k miles. VERY unusual for it to be worn out yet and need heavier oil for that reason.

Agreed. If its consuming oil my guess is that it's been babied and possible deposits are causing consumption.
My 04 had 280k,used 5w-20 conventional from day one and didn't consume a drop of oil between changes
So 100k sounds odd to have wear issues.

If it's being driven gently and not really getting up to temp then deposits can form in the cylinder head. I would imagine you are giving it plenty of a workout when you are towing that boat so I wouldn't worry about that.

I have actually heard of the 5.7L HEMI having consumption issues, and also excessive engine noise issues, using M1 before. I have had a couple HEMI Ram's( 04 & 08 )and it was a frequent complaint on the Dodge Truck forums. Not bashing M1 just commenting this is not the 1st time I have heard this although it was more common with 5W30.
IMO the MDS system in your Ram is designed to operate using 20 weight oil so that is what I would stay with. I would not go out of spec. That is me. Do as you like. I always run the mfg spec'd oil and I have never had a problem. Ran the spec'd 5W30 in my 04 and the spec'd 5W20 in my 08 and neither used a measurable amount of oil over 5K OCI's( used RP ).
1qt over 4000 is not a major problem. Seeing as you haven't abused it most likely it is just some build up/deposits causing it. Could be something else mechanical but I wouldn't worry too much.
You can try a couple things to see if it helps. You can try an additive that will clean out any deposits that may be causing this issue like Seafoam. You could try an additive like the one from LubroMoly( sp? ) or Auto-RX that clean and recondition seals. Or you can try a High Mileage oil that cleans and reconditions seals as well.
I would probably use some Seafoam in the crankcase before you next change your oil to do a quick clean( I have done this before and it works very well - add the mfg recommended amount then drive for about 20 minutes and change oil )then I would swap over to a High Mileage oil for a few OCI's and see if it helps clean some more and recondition your seals to help with the consumption.
I don't know of any full synthetic High Mileage oils in 5W20 but Kendall offers an High Mileage blend in 5W20 that is very good as does Valvoline( Maxlife ). You can get the maxlife at Walmart or most any local retailer while the Kendall is best ordered online at petroleumservicecompany.com.
