Do you use all the HP your engine is capable of?

Here is a HP/Torque curve for a Chevy 6.0. It’s peak HP is at 5400 RPM. I find I would have to really nail it to hit 5400 rpm and usually don’t exceed 4300 rpm (Peak torque) when flooring it to pass a vehicle. I guess most of the smaller cars rev to peak HP but what about owners of trucks out there? Do you reach redline very often?

When I'm towing heavy 7K+ at some point in every trip I end up foot on the floor at max TQ usually pulling a steep hill.

Driving around almost never. 90% of the time Im babying it as it has way more than it needs to get out of its own way.

I hardly make my 6.0 get off the chair since it doesn't need to. A mid floor is enough to switch lanes and blow the amber to not get stuck on the red. I also don't like the thought of abusing the trans and that's why I've got 314k on my original internals 4 spd and she's still good. Just a few fluid changes,

Every few days I'll give it a full thottle romp up through the gears, or as many as it will shift through before I run out of space. Peak torque is somewhere around 3000rpm, HP peaks somewhere around 5500 or so as I recall.

Its good to work the turbo out every now and then.

Very rarely, maybe 1/2 dozen times in a year, when passing slow vehicles on two lane highways. I try to make sure I have plenty of time to pass without needing redline, but in some situations it's best to floor it, get by and get on my way. Especially if there are several cars backing up behind the slowpoke.

Yes, occasionally I like to hit the afterburners and use all the power.

The power at 7500 RPM is very good when accelerating.

With 167 "Wild Horses" under the hood of my 2 ton car, I bet I've come close a few times; but I do manage my momentum.

All my driving life I've made 4 hour trips regularly. I firmly believe this has contributed mightily to my vehicles' health.
That and maintenance...which improved once I discovered BITOG.
Revving any engine's guts out has never been my bag. I'll approach redline but need to reach it.

Similary UncleDave, I pull a heavy trailer @20,000lbs and a CGVW of about 30,000lbs. The engine runs 1,525 RPMs at 65MPH and gets about 9.5 MPG, it's working pretty hard. While going uphill, the engine commonly outputs maximum torque that it's capable of at whatever RPM it's running, usually pretty slow. Even if it shifts to 7th, which is direct, the engine only runs about 2,100 RPMs at 65 MPH, but it's outputting maximum torque at that speed. We can pull up most hills with a single shift into 9th, the engine runs 1,650 RPMs in 9th. The L5P is capable of 900 lb-ft torque and 300 HP at 1,650 RPMs.

To answer the OP's question, yes the Duramax frequently outputs maximum torque when we are towing. The caveat is it's never at higher than about 2,500 RPMs. Peak torque with the L5P is 910 lb-ft @ 1,600 RPMs. I've never held it to the floor, just no reason to.

Periodically, definitely. Merging rapidly can be fun, as can be overtaking. The truck, merging with one of the boats on the back, she's to the floor for several gears. I have no durability concerns with the engines or transmissions.

I enjoy the power but quit burning rubber years ago. Then the other day my pickup chirped the tires up-shifting :sneaky:
