I have 2 cases of old M1, 15 years + , laying around. Some may even think this is too old to be useful anyhow, but do you think this formula is more pure Syn, than this new M1?

What grades do you have? It's be interesting to see a VOA of the stuff. I bet the high performance flat tappet pushrod pig-iron crowd would be interested in seeing the Zinc/Phophorus levels in that oil.

Even though the old stuff may be "more pure Syn", I'm pretty sure that the current crop of M1 would provide better protection for your engine.

The bottles are sealed, so I can't tell if the oil is cloudy. When I did add a quart to balance off a 4qt. jug, the oil seem just as clear/clean as any other. The weights are 10w30,M1, and 20w50(?) Castrol.

I would be curious.. make that anxious to read a Virgin Oil Analysis on one of those 15 year-old jugs. I would like to see how it stacks up with the new SM.

How about it?.... got the exta cash to make this happen?

greaseball,
Any chance you describe the labeling on the old M1 ? I'd be interested in what API,ILSAC,ACEA, and "car builder" specs are on the bottle. Also ,if equiped is there a little 5 number/letter sequence somewhere around the lower left or right corner ? And not to burden you but do the two cases differ in the above information ?

It might be a good 1q addition to a fill of newer Mobil 1 with more modern additives, but less PAO. Just thinking.

Are you planning to use it? Check the bottom of the bottle, to make sure the additives have not precipitated out.

At the time I was buying it, it was a 'sale' priced item, and I would use this type of oil for a long car trip. Thinking at the time it would hold up better than dino, and I could make a long trip, like x-country, with reliable fill. I have new Havoline, that I add to the crank in winter,(which some believe has no effect). But maybe I should use up this old M1 first. The 20w50 Castrol is probably going to be an antique: the car I bought that for is in semi-retirement.
