Just wondering if it's important to shake the bottle before pouring the oil into the engine. I've heard mixed opinions. Some say additives settle so the bottle needs to be shaken. Thoughts?

A little personal don't ya think?

What a silly idea (to shake). The engine's internal environment will provide plenty of opportunity for agitation. In fact, it is probably best not to shake as any contaminants in the virgin oil could be suspended rather than remain on the bottom of the oil container where they might not actually get poured into the engine.

I shake it. Also, if the bottles are cool (basement storage) I like to put them in a warm place the day before so that less remains in the bottles after pouring.

OK, Johnny O, what is the straight story on this? Do I need to shake up my Pennzoil to get all the carefully formulated additives in my engine, or does it need to be decanted like a fine wine?

As a cost/benefit analysis, I choose to shake. Contaminates will get filtered out quickly, additives lost in the bottom of the bottle are gone forever.

unless we are dealing with sedimentary types of additivies (slick50?), otherwise, I do not shake.

For motor oils, I prefer to heat up with warm water bath to thin it before pouring.

More so with gear oil (75W90)

It was easy to see a little thick black stuff in the bottom of a yellow bottle of Pennzoil Multi-grade. It was sitting on the shelf for months and I looked in the jar after I poured it out. Since then, about 5 years ago, I shake the bottles well.

Any downsides to not shaking the bottle? Is it possible for additives to remain in the bottle and not reach the engine? I not the odds might be small but I'm wondering if it's possible. Thanks

Why shake bottles to pour these "sediments" into our engines, only to have these same "sediments", in theory, settle in our engines? We cant shake our engines before cranking. In other words, if it doesnt combine with my oil in the bottle, it has no business going into my engine. That just my opinion.
Do whatever makes you happy. I once knew a guy who, after he poured oil from a bottle would let that bottle drain, for 3 days, into another bottle. After about 192 bottles, he gained another quart! The therapy eventually helped me...HIM!

!0 years ago as I was pouring some Valvoline oil into my engine I noticed the last 1/10th quart changed from oil to a shiny silver fluid. I checked the other valvoline bottles and the same thing. I think the additives setteled out after sitting for several weeks. I now shake all oil.

I was told by a Implement dealer that 5 gallon pails of Case #1 oil has a strong add pack and that if users of this oil did not shake up the pail prior to OC they would lose great benifit of the add pack. I shake all oil, I shake, pour in 2/3 bottle, reshake and pour remaining oil with some drain time. I also warm bottles up by wood stove prior to OC. I am paying for those additives in price per litre, might as well use them fully IMO. Buy good oil filters, I have confidence in the filtering. HDEO CI-4/SL oil goes into my gassers and diesel, these oils have high add packages like the Case#1.

If I spotted any sediment in the bottom of a bottle I would never buy that type of oil again. When I put Mobil 1 in my car recently the bottle was clean inside.I have never shaken a bottle of oil prior to pouring it in an engine.
I thought keeping everything in suspension was a sign of a modern quality oil.

Well, I probably turn the bottle upside & give it a shake or two, but this is more out of ritual rather than any concern that the additives have settled out.

A couple of talking points:

- How about dealers & the quick-lubes dealing in bulk oil?

- VOA sampling, does the lab tech "shake" the bottle before drawing a sample?

I don't know about you guys but I just love shakin' those jug's! Oh, you're talking about oil jugs....sorry! No, I don't shake them, but after reading some of these posts I'm not sure if I should or not.
