Do you pre-oil your filter?

I've heard that it's because the filters are so large. By the time the filter finally fills up with oil, and the oil finally starts pumping through the engine, engine damage will have likely occured.

Damage does not likely occur.

There's plenty of oil on stuff for the few seconds that pressure isn't there...pressure doesn't lubricate.

Do we have any data that shows just how dirty new oil is? I find it hard to believe it has much dirt in it. It's as clean as it's ever going to be when you pour it in.

Your fears are completely unwarranted, as the filter bypass is likely employed for a moment every time you start your engine.

It would kill you to own an air-cooled VW beetle with no filter but just a screen in the sump.

Never have, doubt I ever will. Too much evidence to support that over the long haul any advantage would be unnoticable at best.

No one has presented any data that it's beneficial but if you want to do it, go ahead. Worse thing that happens is the filter slips and spills some oil on your garage/driveway.

Couple of us here had reported "loss of prime" by refilling - where we didn't dry. A Vary large commercial application is a different story. Dry never had more than 1.5 sec TC noise.

You Subaru FB25/20 guys ( Forester< impresa Crosstrek) - the car starts dry every time you start it. The inverted filter drains out. Every start! Whaddyagonnado now!

Remember a fully prefilled filter is giant pussball in the middle of the oiling system. How is that beneficial? The dynamics of leak down after warm shutdown presents a differing scenario than that of a pre-fill regimen.

No, never. My dad owned a shop for 50 years and never did this. I just don't believe it's necessary, but if it's something you want to do then have at it.

I do about 3/4 full as my filter sits base up. It is either I prefill or the oil pump does it. The main bearings are held by oil pressure, any time with no oil pressure is detrimental to them. Since it was my money that bought the car, I probably care more about this than someone else working on it.

If the filter installs dome end down or on a 45 degree angle to the bottom, yes. Doesn't hurt to build oil pressure quickly after an OCI.

lf its an easy one to get on I fill it about 2/3, Always lube seal and threads regardless. I just changed my cartridge type and no way to fill it, sounded fine on start up.
