Do you more Rock? Hip Hop? or Country?

Classic rock, hard rock, some thrash and speed metal, some hip-hop (Beastie Boys mostly), classical, celtic, jazz and rhythm and blues (Blue Bros of course

).

The closest I can get to Country is the Allman Bros band. I like the playing of Dickie Betts.

Better half saw "Blue Crush" DVD the other week. Watched it last Thursday...much better without the adds.

I definitely prefer heavy metal (mostly 80s-90s stuff) and hard rock, but I can listen to almost anything except for reggae and rap and country. In my car I've got everything from old Metallica to Gwen Stefani to Timbaland to Evanescence.

As I approached my 50s, I grew tired of Classic Rock from the 60s and 70s. As my two daughters grew, all I heard from their radio was alternative music. I got hooked very quickly. Now I'm 56 years-old and only want to listen to groups like...

Nirvana, Jane's Addiction, Linkin Park, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Greenday, Third Eye Blind, Dave Matthews, Cold Play..... plus around 50 more bands my aging brain can't think of right now....

I need intensity in my instrumentals. There seemed to be a merging of intense vocals that masked the instrumentals at some point.

I like anything well done. That usually means that I'm 5 years behind the times. Never got into cranked out music mills like Foreigner. It was a "cheap and simple" time for us. I missed the intense instrumentals without the socially significant and cerebral lyrics.

ELP, Tull, etc. I guess mind enhancement was part of the deal instead of mind dulling as the trend to more visceral stuff became popular (see above).

Loved southern boogie: Outlaws and such (saw them 5 times)

Liked Nugent ..

Liked Chic Corea

Every once and a while some metal band gets it right for me ..as do many others.

I really liked the Go-Go's and several other groups (usually with female lead vocals) that captured that 80's sound (for me) Kim Weil, Scandal ...

I wanted to vomit at rap until I saw Salt and Peppa on David Letterman. Even my wife remarked "I don't know what they're doing, but they do it really well". En Vogue with funky divas ...but really never bothered beyond those.

Stevie Ray Vaughn - just about anything.

..but one thing I never EVER will play is KC and the Sunshine Band. I classify it with the collection of traditional "bad music" that must be played at wedding receptions. When it was contemporary, I hung my head and thought, "Is nothing sacred?". OTOH, the Average White Band - was a great laugh for me ..kinda like an Andy Kaufman skit on SNL. He acted "real" in his corny way too.

Oh ..and I can't get into the "screaming" vocals of some not to old stuff (WAKE ME UP INSIDE!!! (CAN'T WAKE UP!!). In can't quite figure out what state of mental anguish they're trying to convey. I also never understood the dance music that teenage girls were listening to a few years back..that was essentially (let me see if I can do it in text form) thump-thump-thump ooooo-ahhh ..thump-thump-thump oooowwww-ahhh...thump-thump (repeat).

I mainly listen to 'alt-country' or what I refer to as 'Texas singer-songwriter music'.
This is people like Robert Earl Keen, Townes Van Zant, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Jerry Jeff Walker, etc.
But this also includes non-Texans as well like; Emmy Lou Harris, Buddy and Julie Miller (she writes some of the best songs I've ever heard!!), etc.
These people are sooooo far removed from the mainstream, Music Row, popish, Clear Channel Top 40 country that I would be dissing them calling them "country music"!!!
They write with an intelligence, and a 'heart and soul' rarely, if EVER heard in mainstream country!!!!

I also like many 'post modern' new age folk artists, mainly for their superb songwriting abilities. People like; Richard Shindell, Lucy Kapalansky, John Gorka, Cliff Eberhardt, etc.

Almost ANY cajun/zydeco, and blues music gets me going as well.

Mark, that's not really a cheery thought. Here's something to help:

Whooah, were half way there
Livin on a prayer
Take my hand and we'll make it - I swear
Livin on a prayer

Alt country. Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo, Jayhawks, Bellwether, Vigilantes of Love, Golden Smog just to name a few.

I had written a huge post of all the various music I like, then I looked across my desk and saw this stack of CD's I've been ripping into iTunes for my iPod and figured it would be better to list some of them instead. So, CTRL+A, delete post and start over.

I have 500+ CD's and 250+ records along with an XM subscription so I'm always listening to something. Most recent additions to iTunes are:

*White Zombie - Astro Creep
*Pixies - Surfer Rosa
*Robin Trower - Bridge of Sighs (the new release)
*Killing Joke - Nighttime
*Bryan Ferry - Boys and Girls
*The Who - Ultimate Collection
***** Dale - The Best of
*Cream - The Very Best of
*Metallica - Ride The Lightning
*SRV - Couldn't Stand The Weather (actually ripped three SRV albums)
*Aerosmith - self titled debut
*Rush - Moving Pictures
*Van Halen II
*Alter Bridge - One Day Remains
*Buckethead - Monsters and Robots
*Flock of Seagulls - self titled debut

That's not the whole stack and is just one of several I've been working on but its pretty representative of what I listen to on a daily basis.
