Do you know your ape index?

Trying to picture this in my head. If your arm span is 6 feet, you are 3 feet tall?
Like Quattro Pete said, the ape index can be expressed as a number that you get by subtracting your height from your arm span. Or you can calculate the exact ratio.

That TOO says it's a ratio. Not what you get by subtracting your height from your arm span.

How to calculate: Wingspan / Height

Example: Daniel Woods, arguably the greatest boulderer of all time, is 5′ 8″ (68 in) with a 72-inch wingspan. To calculate his ape index as a ratio you divide his wingspan by his height:

72 in / 68 in = 1.06

When expressed as a ratio, Woods has an ape index of 1.06.

So I repeat, if your arm span is 6 feet, you are 3 feet tall if your ape index is 2?

Your Ape Index 1 would be 2. Your Ape Index 2 would be +36!

If you'd actually used the link and plugged in some numbers and checked the result you'd have seen the results as Ape Index 1 (ratio) and as Ape Index 2 (difference). The reason most people use the difference instead of the ratio is because it's a more relatable figure.

You've never measured a wheel base or a brake rotor or drum? You have never measured suspension components or adjusted headlights? Just to name a few applications. Ever cut a roof rack to width? Ever fabricate anything?
Not in a way I would need a tape measure lol. I measure drums and rotors with a micrometer for like runout and stuff but never have actually measured one with a tape measure. A tape measure is one thing nobody in the shop has come to think of it lol. It’s the tool I have the least of too.

You need a tape measure to calculate your ape index.

I didn't suggest measuring runout with a tape measure. 🤣

Went down to to local park tried to hang one handed from the jungle gym well it didn't work out like i thought. Little girl ask me what i was doing trying to get a ape measurement. While hanging by one hand she came over and pushed me now my shoulder is hosed and i got laffed at. How embarrassing! LOL

So a wide wing span and a tape measure can be used to measure toe in?
Only one arm is needed if you have a metal tape measure with an end hook. Also good for measuring spring length, suspension sag and useful for other cabalistic rituals.
