It used to be that the mantra was change your oil at 3000 miles or 3 months whichever came first. Now mobil 1 ep says that you can go 1 year or 15,000 miles which is probably necessary as most people dont put 15,000 miles on their cars every 3 months.

I think that with synthetics that the need for the 3 month oil change has ended. In fact oil seems to stand up well regardless of the interval in the crankcase.

If one doesnt have fuel dilution issues or anti-freeze in the oil then why does 5000 miles at 3 months matter more than 5000 miles in a year?

Does time between oil changes even matter anymore?

Opinions?

Personally, Im changing oil at about 2X per year per car and even then I could probably extend my drains longer.

I'm with you on twice a year, even though I can go longer between changes. It gives me a reason for getting under the car and doing an inspection for potential problems, checking the bolts on the oil pan, or transmission pan, and all those other failure points.

Depends on the type of driving (highway vs city), climate (how many miles driven once started in a cold climate) and engine (My Camry V6 just beats the **** out of the oil) . I have two that go once a year, another can go 12,000 miles and two that barely make it to 5000 miles.

i have never gone by how many months old the oil is, only by mileage.

this means that, somtimes with an infrequently driven car,m i may see over 1-2 years per oci with dino oil.

my dad is comming up on 10 year oil change interval for his impala. hes using dino oil too.
