Do Scooters Make Sense?

Thats probably more in keeping with what some of us define as scooter. For me, scooter = moped type transportation with a small engine that doesn't get over 50mph. Anything better than that = motorcycle, especially something with a 650cc engine, even if it looks like a moped, such as the Burgmans you mention.

Actually its really not uncomfortable. I know it looks it. But its really pretty O.K. (for a MC)

Yes, it sure does look that way. Kinda like you're in something like a jockey position as opposed to "just riding". I don't know how it would work on a longer ride.

What do I know? I haven't been on a MC in 25 years ..at least for over 5 minutes or so.

By the time I get around to it ..I think a Cushman will be in order.

The majority of people who drive (ride?) Cushman carts professionally seem to have a very low center of gravity due to extra "sitting flesh." Are you prequalified? :p

I think I was pretty clear that, in my case, I am talking about 125cc scooters and smaller. I have no experience with bigger ones.

Hmm ...most I see are svelte skimpy clad Euroe-type blond females. I don't know what type of Cushman drivers you have around you, mori ..but I've never seen anything like you're describing. They may be .00000054391% overweight at the most. Are west cost Cushman drivers all fat?? Never would know it around here...

West cost, eh?

SF isn't representative of CA due to all the hills we have. The general populace in SF is less fat than the rest of the state, which is one of the slimmer states to begin with.

Yup, almost all our motorized meter maids are obese. I rarely see any white or even whitish meter maid. Our bus drivers and many desk jockeys are also mostly overweight or obese. The local postal workers, at least the ones who walk on foot, are almost all skinny.

Well, we wouldn't think that you would hermit in SF, would we now, mori? Surely your critical review of Cushman ..and as we see now bus drivers and postal delivery people, isn't just limited to where you live. Such a fine level of acute distinction can't be turned off (spike memory from The Golden Child) "shzest~ like that" (snaps fingers)...can it? I'm sure that you don't put blinders on at the city limits.

..this may not directly answer your question ..but if I were to buy a motorcycle, I would probably be looking in the 650cc or greater displacements so the bike could fit the rider.

Gary, I see Cushman carts only in the city and in the megalopolitain (it should be a proper word!) suburbs. I pay attention to them only where they hunt me, which is downtown and near the post office.

My experience with public transportation, which I am trying to forget, is limited to Boston, Seattle, San Francisco and Berkeley. There, big butts dominate the driving jobs.

I'd be embarrassed to ride anything under 80 cc. Scooters are fine for cruising or for shirt distance transportation. I don't want to ride any bike in dense traffic.

PS: Meat Loaf on a scooter -- deal with that image. :p

Ha, I've been to CA, and know that is a lie.
And the 75% oriental population in the Bay area doesn't count.

In crowded urban environments, scooters / motorcycles are king. Think London, Paris, Hong Kong, or Taipei.

In suburbia, they don't make so much sense outside of driving down to the nearest store. Way too many people in oversized vehicles not really paying too much attention to begin with that can end your life in a second.

A scooter was perfect for getting around safely in the small town where I grew up. Wouldn't want to ride a bike on city streets here for safety reasons.

Yeah, they are also perfect for villages and small towns and such as well. But suburbia.... no way. I grew up in a small town and I rode my bicycle everywhere and then later a motorcycle.

Did I say motorcycles or scooters were ideal in suburbia?

Huh? Wasn't saying you did. I had said neither were ideal for suburbia.

Are we confused? To me, suburbia and small town / village are completely different.
