We all know how touted M1 is all over the oil bottles, commercials, used by over half of NASCAR teams, official motor oil of NASCAR etc.. But how true is this? And what grade would they use in those high performance, high revving V8's? Or is it just a huge ad campaign to sell more oil by XOM? Since the majority of consumers, mechanics included, don't know much at all about oil, or care about ingredients/performance properties in the engine itself. "If NASCAR uses it, it must be the best!" Type of approach.

I've kinda distanced myself from the sport since Earnhardt Sr. died, but I do recall sometime in the 80's or early 90's, in an interview, Rusty Wallace claimed his team used M1 15W-50 for the first time in their car and it made a huge difference in engine performance and allegedly helped them win more races. Supposedly kicking off the synthetic oil craze in racing at that time. I wasn't very enveloped in oil during this period, and bought whatever was cheapest/sale so all of this flew over my head. Also obviously before the internet and having all this research at the click of a mouse like today.

These days, I'm a pretty devout M1 user myself in my Tacoma and motorcycles, but not a rabid fanboy either and open to speculation and discussion about what's what. This is BITOG after all! As you can see in my sig, my Mustang uses regular old Pennzoil rather than Mobil Super.

A few years ago I had an all access pass to a Nascar truck race here in the area near St. Louis. I could see in several teams garage's and saw small barrels of M1 oils. M1 is one of the most familiar logos in racing around the world.

Is it over the counter oil or specially made by Mobil for NASCAR teams? Ahhhh.....Big difference. With enough funds, I can get my own blend...

Mobil makes great oil. So, not trying to discredit them. Just thinking!

About 8-9 years ago, Johnny, a long time member here reported that several teams from the IMSA series was using off the shelf M1 5-30 at the 24 hours of Daytona were he had an all access pass.

My guess is that if the next bid comes it would be that brand who wins it. Let's say if Pennzoil, Castol or Valvoline wins the bid over M1, we'll see Pennzoil all over NASCAR and NASCAR on their bottles. What if Castrol sponsors a NASCAR team, do they have to use M1?

The cars showing the M1 logo use M1.

As well as Pennzoil

If it's the "official oil of NASCAR"....doesn't make it the oil that the NASCAR teams all use...nor does a badge/sticker mean that what's in the sump is what's on the logo.

This is the truth.

Kevin Conway had Extenze male enhancement product logos plastered all over his car so I guess he had to use the product. ;-)

Mobil 1 motor oil is used by more than 50 teams competing in the NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR XFINITY Series and NASCAR Truck Series. The use of these oils across all three series provides a testing ground for ExxonMobil engineers, who create products for race cars and road cars.

There was a marketing video put out by Mobil and Rusty Wallace years ago and he was talking about the 0w5 qualifying oil they made for his team. Not all of NASCAR uses Mobil 1 but apparently more than 50 teams do. Could't tell you which grade or whether it's specially formulated. I'm sure Pennzoil/Valvoline/Castrol are also found inside many of these engines too.

How about the Mark Martin #6 Viagra car. By the way, some of these races are won by just an inch. Everything helps.

I must go with skepticism. Racecars are rolling billboards. Bottles and drums of oil in garages and pits might be props filled with anything.
I see no reason to trust anyone when money-especially advertising money-is involved.
Misrepresent with stickers on a car = you get money?? Too easy to lie, too risky to trust.

If any of you even remotely think the off-the-shelf M1 Garbage that you buy at Autozone is what is being used, you're delusional....

IF any teams use Mobil oils, they are custom, high end blends that you or I can touch. With that said, in my career with the ALMS/IMSA and BMW's We did NOT use Mobil products and knew of many teams that had engine failures while using it. Our 1999-2002 BMW M3 did use off the shelf Castrol SYNTEC in the 5 gallon dry sump...

Many teams in NASCAR today are using the Gibbs racing oils as well as Redline.

I "touched" some Mobil1 Racing 0w30 yesterday. Ordered it over Amazon, EZ to get. Its a PAO, with I think some ester, high moly, high ZDDP, high anti-foam oil that would easily do just fine all day at NASCAR. You might be limiting your thinking to regular SN M1 or something, I don't know.
