I have these small, pesky, stinky black ants around my yard and they've decided to stroll into our house. I won't use conventional pest control because I have two dogs and I don't want them breathing, licking, etc., the treated areas.

I'm wondering if anyone has a home-made "recipe" they like for ant control? I'd like to make some ant bait "traps" I can place outside my kitchen. I'm hoping they'll take the bait back to the nest and kill the colony, but maybe that's wishful thinking?

I'm thinking I'll use some disposable plastic containers and fill them with the ant control concoction, and then poke some holes in them so the ants can get in.

Suggestions?

Thank you,
Ed

I've always had great results with one part yeast, ground in a pestle, one part sugar, ground in with the years.

Then add one part honey, to make a paste.

Put it where the ants like to go.

There is a product I've used for years called Terro. It is basically the same thing as subaru1991's formula. It works! IF the ants are a type that likes sugar you will see a lot of activity around the bait for a few days and then, POOF, nor more ants. You can get Terro at Wal Mart if you don't want to mix your own stuff. It's pretty cheap.

I do use the Terro, and it does seem to work pretty well. I guess I'm just wondering if someone knows of something "home-made" they might like better?

Home made Terro...

Combine 1 cup of sugar,
1 tablespoon of Borax,
and ½ cup of hot water

Let cool...

Borax is in the laundry soap section...

I bought a 16oz bottle of terro on amazon for 12$ when it was on sale. I just take some straws and cut them into 1/3rd and put them out.

Be warned if the ants like that type of bait you have to leave them alone as they come in hordes.

Boric acid is slightly different than borax I believe, but it does the same thing. The ants may not stuff their faces with it since it's a salt, might not taste good to them. Who knows?

Boric acid can easily be mixed with pancake syrup or honey to create irresistible ant bait.

Nice and slow which allows lots of sharing...

Twice each summer I buy either Ortho, Spectracide or Bayer Bottle Concentrate Bug Killer, the one where you pour it in a Dial-A-Spray bottle and attach it to a garden hose. I set my Dial-A-Sprayer to 1-1/2.

Bring the dogs inside the house for a couple hours, spray the yard and when dry, allow the dogs back outside. It will also rid the yard of fleas, ticks.....etc.....

Our summers in Michigan are only 3-4 months long. I'll spray June 1st and again in mid August. No bugs - no cancer - no sick or itchy dogs.

I use to use and poison back when my children where younger (and we didn't live on 3 acres). Just put it in a lawn fertlizer thing and spread it threw the yard and soaked it down good. Works best right before a heavy rain.

Never done the DIY home methods I just hate fire ants.

Yes sir I think that is the best ant bait/killer ever.

Terro is just borax like the recipes here.

Some ant types are resistant to borax. I never learned that until I moved to my current state.

Now I order Advion online. It works very well.

i boil the water then combine the ingredients.
be sure to label it so nobody pours it on their pancakes thinking its karo!
its not poison just unpleasant.
positively deadly for the whole colony.
if you dont enjoy thousands of ants coming to your bait for their last supper set it up outside.

It ferments and creates CO2 pressure inside them. Their internals rupture...
