Hi guys.

Im 67 years old,my wife thinks I need professional medical help.
The reason she thinks this,is because I spend 2 hours infront of the oil display at Wall Mart once a month when we shop there.
I change the oil in my Ford Escape every 4 months using PP5w30.
I bought the vehicle new in Aug.2008,and curently have 7000 miles on it,as you can see it sits around with out use a lot.
I have changed it some times with only 1200 miles on the oil.
The big thing here is that it sits around a lot in the winter time, gets cold hear in central On. Canada.Changing the oil in my vehicles is a very satifying and fun thing for me to do,cant sleep the nite before thinking about it. I there anyone else hear with the same dissoder that I am this playing.Do I really need professsional help?

PP 5w30 Wix napa gold.

Sounds like you have obsessive compulsive disorder. If it interferes with your sleep, then yes it's a problem. I had somewhat of an obsession early on with oil but it's waned alot. give it some time, if your still having problems or if your wife threatens to leave, then get the medical help

I'd say you're alright! I get all excited 'testing out' different oils in my vehicles myself.

A while back, I woke up in the middle of the night, thinking about my oil filter. I change it mid way through the OCI (10-12,500 miles), and I was way past that. Made a note to change it the next morning, and sure enough the filter was clogged.

It's all good fun.

Knowing you share the same problem with a lot of other people is the first step to recovery. :)
I actually look forward to oil changes and with 5 cars in the family there's always one that is next.
I usually spend a week thinking about what oil to buy; which is where I am now.
PP, M1EP or PU? Think I'll make a run to WM and Pep Boys. Probably get some of each. :)

Gouda, Joining BITOG IS professional help! All of us here need daily support for our obsession with oil or oil related problems. Is it PP, or GC or maybe M1? Possibly orange can or MMO may be your obsession today. We all meet here to relieve the stress. what more can I say? Until tommorow, have a good day BITOGer's! ---Oldtommy

Is there anyway you can change it the night before?

I also suggest picking up another vehicle for oil testing purposes.

yes, you have a problem. and you are in good company! hey, I fret the same way over changing car oil AND lawnmower oil!

you probably dont need to change PP that often, but you already know that.

there is this 10 step program... where you mail me all of your oil and filters....

I use the 12 step method for my oil fettish: I visit 6 stores a week that sell oil to make sure Im not missing something,,lol, it works for me. Keep having fun changing ur oil, and look a the new oil jugs and all their colors.

I am OCD on many levels:
-oil (which has normalized a BIT in the last 2-3 yrs)
-mid/high end audio (even though i can't afford what I really want..yet)
-how my firefox theme looks
-how clean the dashboards look in our cars, without caring much about the outside.
-obsessively observing the amount of "gap" between tires and -fenders of cars and thinking about it for hours.

Nope. You seem perfectly fit to change oil. What's the problem?

Tell your wife to change her own oil if she thinks you don't do a good enough job..

We had a wild and wooly maintenance guy named Herky. We'd get an annual medical survey to fill out before the annual physical they gave us. It asked how much we drank ..etc. He honestly stated that he drank about 3/4 of a case of beer a day. When they interviewed him they asked him if he wanted help with that. His reply was: "Get your own beer".

At 67 there are some positives to what your doing. At least you're keeping busy not setting around watching the tube all the time. I'd suggest getting a pt job or volunteer if you don't so.. I work with some older guys that do it. They tell me it's great to get away from the wife and uhh look at the ladies.. dirty old farts makes me look like a saint.

Gouda - I'm 25 and I do the same thing, only not at such a short interval.

This site collects a lot of guys with the same obsessive tendency. We are 'maximizers,' as some psychologists say, we want what we perceive to be the very best either in terms of price, quality, economy, protection, or some mix of these. To make our decisions we need data that we constantly gather, but the oils constantly change... So there is no rest for the wicked. It is a very interesting and multifaceted topic that can really keep your mind occupied if you need something to chew on.
