Do fuel additives clog fuel filters..?

Hi all...

I just stopped at an auto parts place to get some Techron concentrate and the guy said that the cleaner will loosen carbon and dirt and it may get treapped into my fuel flter.

He suggested after 3 tankfuls to change my fuel filter..

Is this true, can using fuel cleaners actually backfire and clog the fuel filter.?

Most PEA cleaners (like Techron) dissolve carbon deposits. However in a system which has a heavy amount of deposits there are times when fuel filters will need to be replaced after treatment. As a general rule, I think it is a good idea to periodically replace the fuel filter anyways, but if your vehicle has routinely run high quality gas, and is in good shape then you probably won't have a problem.

I suppose if your tank were really full of grunge it would be possible, but I've never heard that before.

Nonsense. There may be crud in your fuel system, but your filter can handle it without clogging. Ditto for oil additives and oil filters.

If your vehicle manufacturer recommends changing the fuel filter at some interval, then follow that recommendation. Changing fuel filters used to be quite common - remember the small, white plastic fuel filters clipped on the firewall? Now days, injected vehicles have expensive filters inside the fuel tank that frequently last the life of the vehicle.

Techron should only be used about once/oil change not with every tank.

The carbon deposits are in the cylinders not fuel line.

The alcohol in E10 will loosen lots of crud anyway if you have for example a vehicle that sat unused for several years.

On some vehicles with the filter under the chassis good to change or loosen so filter does not get rusted in place.
