Do former Navy Seals typically brag about it a lot

There's a guy at the gym who was let go from a local law enforcement agency in one of those "resign or be fired" incidents. He used to boast about having been a Navy Seal. Now, he is always talking about being a contractor who trains Navy Seals. There are no Naval installations within probably 300 miles of here. Mentions China Lake and 29 Palms, etc. Going on deployments to train and etc.

I always thought the real deal didn't go around boasting telling any nearby female who will listen.

Seems like a real braggart and I know most former special forces soldiers aren't usually that way, and instead exhibit a quiet and confident demeanor.
 
I've never known of a real, true, genuine military man (or woman)... that you'd really want to tell to simply "shut up".

Sounds like a attention seeking blowhard to me.
 
From what I understand, they don't need to brag about it. People around them just know. This guy sounds like an insecure wannabe.

Does he have a full beard, wear a camo baseball hat and Oakleys, maybe wear some kind of scarf around his neck, and drive a big [censored]-extension of a truck? You have your answer.
 
Who knows, maybe he was doing the laundry for the navy seals? He just leaves that part out.

Our local coffee shops, aka Tim Horton's parking lots, are littered almost every evening with sports bike riders bragging about their riding skills. Sure, the young and shallow ladies just eat it up, but one look at the rear tire, with 1.5 inch untouched rubber on each side, tells the true story.
 
A guy I met in kindergarten and grew up with washed out of army boot camp. ...imagine my surprise when I went to the gym he was a "trainer" at and someone asked me if I was an army ranger too.
Typically his Bovine Scatology goes for awhile before people start to catch on ...by then he usually moves on to a new place and it starts all over. People that have done extraordinary things usually usually get a dose of humility along with it.

My girlfriends son was in the U.S. Army Rangers for many years. Served in the Middle East with about 9 tours. Purple Heart I believe.

He has many photos in Iraq like Baghdad, Saddam's palace, Afghanistan, dead enemy, etc. (including some with the President after a member of his unit got the Medal of Honor).

Does he talk about it? No, not unless you ask him. You would never know.
 
Generally no they don't. A classmate of mine in high school did the 82nd Airborne to Ranger to Green Beret to long alphabet acronym thing. We graduated in 2001, so it gives you a time frame. He hates it when there were stories about him in the paper. He won't talk about it much to anyone. I asked him some things when we were having a couple beers together. He is one of those people that you look at and know he is a real operator, but doesn't flaunt it at all.
 
I've met a very few who tend to blather about it, but its kinda sad in those cases. They're a little like the stereotypical high school jock whose life has been downhill ever since the last game his senior year.

I've met far more who would never bring it up unless asked, and most of them would shrug it off and change the subject to something else.
 
I'm sure there are many different personality types that are special operators. If, and that's a very big if, he was one, he's not typical. Most of the folks who I know who have seen any sort of action don't really talk about it.

Here is my take on this sort of thing in general: What is the difference between a Fairy Tale and a War Story?

Fairy tales start out, "Once upon a time..." War stories start out, "No s---, there I was..."

After that, they are identical.

I used to worked with a guy who was in the service ( maybe navy seal ) who had all kinds of stories to tell, how he cut people in half with machine guns and stuff.
No matter what the conversation was about he'd stick his nose and tell a story about him being there and done that. He was once a porn star too, Eventually people caught up to his [censored] and no one would pay attention to his stories anymore.
Some people need their dose of attention early in the morning to help them feel good the rest of the day,

Work around a lot of guys who serve - they don't talk about what they may have experienced unless you ask them about it. And even then, they probably wont say much.

There are always exceptions but they're exceedingly rare. And sad.

First of all, it is SEAL, all capitalized.

Secondly, the son-in-law of one of my best friends was a Navy SEAL, he was extremely humble and down to earth. I never once heard of him brag about anything. The most he would say is that he just did his job. He was killed in Irag in '08, while selflessly putting himself in harms way in an attempt to save his friend and Teammate.

My friends Daughter is now married to another SEAL, and he is apparently just as humble.

I would have a hard time believing that any true SEAL would brag about the operations they have been apart of.
