Do dentists enjoy making you suffer?

My dentist offered me conscious sedation (sorta like what they do when you have a colonoscopy) when they pulled all 4 wisdom teeth, one of them was impacted, so it was a bit complex.

I never felt/remembered a thing. very satisfied with the experience; I think all dentists should offer conscious sedation!

and yeah, my dentist is a she

It's probably some investment for some "group". The capital outlay for a practice is pretty steep. They probably manage that cost over some longer term for some tax thing ...blah..blah ..but it's still sterile $$$ and cents.

There is no relationship to form. She's not a member of the community. She wasn't born there ..doesn't live there. She doesn't have "patients" ..she has customers. Good customers are the ones that can afford to pay for your services ...and the rest ..well they aren't really around to ponder over.

Your dentist (or any other provider) treats you like a commodity because you allow it. There are a lot of options out there and it's the fool that doesn't shop around for quality care. There are plenty of quaility dentists if you're willing to put as much research into dental care as you do motor oil.

Well, I don't, really. I haven't been back. I'll use them when a cap breaks loose or I have an emergency ..otherwise I'm into the typical mass extraction at the 60+/- year mark. I can't afford dental care in the 21st century. I don't see my doctor either. My wife's insurance is good, but the costs are too high for services rendered.

A friend just had her arm broken. She went to the E.R. ($500 in managed real money) and a $100 copay. They put on an air cast and told her to call the orthopedic surgeon on Monday ..which, if he's already crowded at his practice, will tell her to go to the E.R. where they will, again, attempt to get $500/$100 from her for walking in ..while he uses their space since he's already booked solid.

My dentist ..make that THE dentist will have to live with less revenue. I did REALLY tell her that this business model was about a decade too late. Now is the time to retreat to the traditional practice.

Thank goodness dental care isn't like health care. They can't hold you hostage to shake down your wallet. You can just lose your teeth.

People sometimes die because of lack of dental care. Remember the kid whose mom could not afford dental care and he died due to complications?

The dentist I see has himself, two hygenists, a dental assistant and an office manager, as well as a very nice office.
He takes time with each patient, and charges accordingly, although it is not outrageous.
I suspect that there are better values in dental care than what you are seeing, Gary.
Value being a combination of price and service received.
We all know that you get what you pay for, and you can often get a great deal more by being willing to pay a little more out of pocket.

Oh, my old dentist wasn't cheap. He just knew his patients and spaced the therapy out sensibly for his workload and your wallet. Today I could blow $7,000 in "The Practice" in a month. They would just up sell until you ran out of credit.

I need to ask you, Gary.
Why would someone as bright as you obviously are fall for such a scam?

I wouldn't ..I haven't ..I don't. I'll also probably have dental issues in the future. I'm sure I already have some.

I can't afford "to do it right".

Ugghh. Now that things have healed up a bit I can feel that the freakin' tooth puller left a peice of my farthest back tooth. Now I have to have more shots!

I'm convinced...he does enjoy making me suffer.

(they also denied my pain killer refill even though it still hurts "cause it shouldn't by now"

HOW DID YOU GET VIDEO OF MY PROCEDURE?! Isn't that supposed to be confidential?!

I hope you don't have the colonoscopy video...

I believe dentists have the most thankless job on the planet- it seems that NO ONE wants to go there. I do not believe dentists enjoy making anyone suffer, or at least they shouldn't.

About five years ago I moved about 100 miles north of where I spent pretty much my entire life but I still have the same dentist- I've had him since 1975 and he does truly exemplary work.

Is it unreasonable to be somewhat against a large man stabbing you over and over in the gums and pulling bones out of your face with plyers?

I'm just off put by the way it seems dentistry hasn't changed much since the 50s...except we get worse service now. (or at least I do)

Not hardly. Watch Dirty Jobs sometimes. Those jobs usually don't pay 6 figures either. No one wants to go there b/c they make it uncomfortable. It's like auto stealerships, they have worked hard to attain their ranking.

Agreed...if you make six figures, nobody needs to thank you for your job, and you're not allowed to whine about it. You're allowed to retire to your beach house any time.

So they want me in again next week to finish the job and pull the hunk of tooth they left...I think it's only fair I get to kick the dentist in nuts for putting me through this again, no?

My insurance covered everything BUT the $75 for nitrous last time. Am I out of line expecting FREE nitrous for finishing off the job they should have already done?
