Do better Mann + Hummel

Who knows how long that filter was sitting around on how many shelves in what sort of conditions. It isn't Purolator's fault, that's why they sent you to the retailer.

I’m not saying it’s their fault it is in this condition but the customer support response is.

“ I would not recommend that you install the filter, they do not leave the factory in this condition. You need to return the filter to where you purchased it from.

Thank you,

Seems like the appropriate response in this case. Still would be interesting to see the date code ... bet it's pretty old.

I disagree. They and no one else can prove it didn’t leave their facility in that condition or with something wrong with it to cause the corrosion. That’s the issue. They didn’t ask a single follow up question. Mass production of anything comes with flaws and a responsible manufacturer that actually cares would ask about the packaging, where it was purchased and any identifying information so they can keep tabs if it becomes a case of a faulty batch or something. We’ve all seen the pictures or even first hand dealt with Wix and Purolators with all kinds of flaws from louvers not open to horrible glue jobs. Who’s to say this wasn’t a manufacturing flaw? It’s likely not but we can’t be certain.

The whole post including the title reeks of borderline entitlement.

IF you bought expired meat at the grocery store would you call cargill and complain?

If I bought Pennzoil at wal-mart and it was used oil.. Pennzoil should take care of it or wal-mart?

Rock auto's supplier sent you some craptastic filter. Its rock auto's problem not the manufacturer.

Their response to you seems clear and IMO appropriate.

If a sealed jug of Pennzoil came with what appeared to be used oil it absolutely is on them not Walmart…

This isn’t entitlement, this is the expectation of quality customer service. Which this wasn’t. You go ahead and settle for this nonsense, I will not.

They were probably tired of taking the same call from 20 different people that day who all tried to be cheap and buy off of RockAuto's discount list to save money. I used to do Tech Support for an automotive manufacturer....Rock Auto customers were exhausting, typically.

I’ll rescind the remark I made and just leave it at, I never told them where it was purchased

Oil filters may leave the factory with various flaws ... but not rusted like that. What's the date code on the filter ... bet it's pretty old. Was there also rust down in the center tube?

You got the correct response from Purolator, and then the correct resolution to the issue from RockAuto. RockAuto didn't say contact Purolator because they know it wasn't something that happened from the factory.

No matter how many times you ask that you aren’t going to get the answer. I can’t read it. I looked. It’s indistinguishable black stamping on black paint.

Not even with a strong LED flashlight? How about try a photo with the flash on.

For some insight here is an interview with the President of Mann+Hummel Automotive Division and the General Manager. Neither says the word 'oil filter'. It's all high-minded clap trap nonsense.

Actual Mann Hummel products are great. Purolator bad before they were bought out and nothing has changed. WIX on the other hand has still remained decent.

I have a filters in my cold storage barn that I bought last year or the year before. I’m guessing they fine.

I mean I really don’t care enough to horse around with it. I just thought the dismissive response from M&H was a bit disappointing

I see these as perfectly reasonable and expected responses from a manufacturer. In their knowledgeable opinion that filter was improperly stored or handled by someone downstream. If I ever received a filter in that condition, I would be working on returning it to the retailer that day.

I did…

Got the replacement from RA today. Based on packaging alone this one is way older than the rusty crusty junker. Also note the plastic on the bottom to help prevent such corrosion from occurring. Something the new ones don’t have…

The date code on the dome looks to be "050616" = May 6, 2016. Can't go by the copyright date (2011) on the filter label - that's just for the lable.

Bet the other rusted filtet wasn't made in China, and why it didn't have the cellophane on the base plate.

Yes I know you can’t go off of the copyright but the box in general does give a timeline of age. I’ve never cared how old a filter is. I have a couple K&Ns on a shelf that are probably approaching 2 decades

Once 1995-96 in Woolworths, I opened fram orange filter box, looked in center.it indeed had a cigarette butt in it.a d the metal, looked really low quality.
